B O B HURRICANE WRECK

was at duxford recenly and walked in to the b o b section to be confronted by a battered merlin engine near the hurricane at the entrance.
thought it looked familiar, and was astounded to see it was from tom gleaves machine (hangrove hill kent)
the last time i had seen it was at the wreck site in 1965 when i found the machine after spending two days looking in the area.
this was several years before it was rediscovered, and removed to flaravia flying club (i think)
the wreckage was a mass of burnt tubes, and wires, with odd bits of cruched aluminium. the engine was several feet away (down a slope), and the prop hub, and reduction housing was even further down the slope.
however i still have a browning machine gun ammunition feed that was still there, together with a brick from the remaining kenley hanger (burnt down after the war) tom gleave (253 sdn) was operating out of kenley when he had to bale out of his burning aircraft.kenley has now been ravaged by the developers, which is a great shame, as it should have preserved as a definitive bob station.

Quite agree PPete, the developers have developed all the former married quarters, recently a different developer has now purchased the officers mess, which I’m sure will be turned into luxury appartments. Atleast they can’t build on the actual runway. Just look at at whats happened to Hornchurch and Hawkinge. 🙁

Septic.
