B of B film – Spitfire XVI – TE184

I am the Archivist for 1855 (Royton) Sqn Air Training Corps and from 1952 to 1967 we had Spitfire XVI TE-184 as our gate guard on loan from the RAF. It was removed in 1967 in order that it could be made ready along with others for use in the Battle of Britain film, which we always thought it did.

However within the last month or so I have come across two separate references to all the Spitfires which took part in the film and TE 184 is not listed in either of them. This would imply that it was for some reason never used in the film after all, can anyone lighten us please

Hi Terry,

I feel that Julians involvement with the ‘warbird’ scene was relativly brief. As previously mentioned he was part of the UK air-racing scene during the late 1980s, so no doubt known to the many pilots that also took part. ( The late Spencer Flack also well known in these circles).

So maybe a suitable request on the G/A section of the PPRUNE site would bring forth some info.

Going back to TE184 briefly, part of the refurb entailed fitting the ‘Nick Grace’ wet-wing fuel tank modification. The extended range being required for long distance flying in Africa I seem to recall.

The attached photo from the DEC Schneider bok by Baldry & Jerram.

Cheers, Chumpy.

TE184 julian savage

thanks for reply
I was aware he had died possibly in 1991, I would love to get actual details of
exactly where and when,
Of more interest is to find someone who new him as friend or better still a relative
regards terry

Hi Terry,
TE184 was acquired by Nick Grace around 1986 thence selling it on to Spencer Flack and Julian Savage. Nick undertaking the rebuild of the fuselage, whilst the wings came to Airframe Assemblies on the Isle of Wight in 1987.
Work progresed steadily until Nicks death in a car crash, as previously mentioned, the whole project then handed over to Trent.

Julian was a keen competitor in the UK air racing scene flying his Christen Eagle G-EGLE. He took part in the ‘Schneider’ race at Bembridge in 1988, whilst on the IOW he visited Airframe Ass to view progress on the wings.

The rest as stated by other members, alas I can find no details of his death though I seem to recall it was in some of the magazines of the time. I think it was whislt flying a light aircraft, maybe another Eagle, certainly not a Spit. Possibly in Kenya or S.A. also probably a bit further back than the ten years that I first thought.

Cheers, Chumpy.

Not in TE184, I think you will find that was in Mk.IX TE566

I think you’ll find that was TE566’s owner, Mike(?) Snoyman.

I think chumpy is correct… I understood the owner was killed in a crash of some sort of aircraft, was a bit more than 10 years ago however. TE184 then spent an age in storage, before a new life under Alain DeCadinet’s control.

As I recall Julian Savage was sadly killed in a plane crash, in Africa about 10 years back.

Editing reason: I now know that my post above is incorrect but so as to not make the subsequent posts seems disjointed I will not delete it

Also TE184 has changed hands several times since the mid-90s.

No

Yes they are. They just don’t do Spitfire restorations.

I was told not to stand under or near the engine of TE184 when it arrived at RAF Henlow in February 1967 – the engine bearer tubes were that corroded.

On an aircraft barely past its 20th birthday

Whilst it might have yielded an odd spare part for the other aircraft it was deemed not worthy of conversion to a static ‘Markaddie’ at that time.

It was never painted in BoB film camouflage nor used as dressing. It therefore, in my view, does not qualify to be included in a list of BoB film participants.

Hi Lion Rock,

TE184 was used as a spare parts donor during the Battle of Britain film, so the answer to your question is yes it was used in the film but not noticeably.

EN830, indeed I recognise this item as I wrote it myself ,as the belief has always been it took part in the film, now I have cause to question that!

According to else where on the intraweb is was !!!!

There followed a period as a gate guard at 1855 (Royton) Squadron Air Training Corps from 1952 to February 1967 when moved to 71 MU RAF Bicester for use in the Battle of Britain film then to RAF Finningley Museum Collection .The aircraft then moved initially to 5 MU RAF Kemble for re-allocation then 23 MU RAF Aldergrove for storage and subsequent display outside the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum in March 1977 thereafter it was stored until sold to Spitfire restorer Nick Grace. Following his death in a car crash in October 1988 the aircraft was acquired by Myrick Aviation and underwent total restoration with Trent Aero Services including conversion to “high back” configuration, and was registered G-MXVI on February 2nd 1989. Following rebuild the aircraft flew for the first time since 1951 on November 23rd 1990. The aircraft was subsequently sold to Alain de Cadenet in 1995.
