I have been sent a picture of a Hurricane with two ground crew. It is a MarkI with black and white undersides with the code letter repeated under the nose on the black side only.
The photograph was taken in the UK but there are not clues other than a hangar.
Any ideas on squadrons?

C is most probably the individual call sign, i have seen this a few times but as you say it was not common, maybe a squadron thing, easier for maintenance, pilot when doing a walkround
312 squadron did black up to the spinner along with 615, 73 did one wing black

Perhaps if I had the code letters I could work it out for myself. The question was how many squadrons put the individual code letter on the black side of the nose. Which part of this is hard to understand?

And the code letters are?

It is not mine to publish but I will ask. There is not a lot to learn from the picture, it has a dH prop, I cannot tell if it is fabric wing, it is on an RAF Station and has the centre demarcation of the black and white with a code letter of C on the left hand side of the nose in white on the black. I am not aware of many squadrons that did this and googling has shown very few. It could possibly be 56, they did do this, and there is not enough of the hangar to reveal where it is.
Does anyone know how many other squadrons did this

A scan of it may help Melvyn
