Please can anybody tell me where this section of armour plate fits in a B-17G?
Also does anyone have a diagram showing the location of all the plate in a B-17G?

Excellent! Thanks B-17man. That’s a positive i/d and it’s also the diagram that I had got in mind. It’s now safely downloaded for future reference.
Your cockpit reconstruction is brilliant. Well done!

Here you go
Thanks, that’s the B-17F diagram that I was referring to. I’m certain that the B-17G armor plate diagram is much clearer and shows the shapes of the plate sections more accurately. I remember using the G diagram to identify the pilot’s seat armour, which is asymmetrical, rather than the symmetrical shape shown in the F diagram.
Warrelics is a good suggestion, thanks W_P. I’d really like to find a photo or diagram clearly showing the part in situ, which I can use in our museum exhibit on the B-17 crash.

It measures 20.5 inches wide by 29.5 high. Your identification sounds very plausible, I was hoping that somebody might have a diagram.
I have looked through and found some info on discs that I have, but I am not able to post it,
However I did find this link http://www.airpages.ru/eng/mn/b17_43.jpg which should answer your question and it shows is exactly as I had suspected where it was located.

Bump! Anybody? Somebody’s always had the answer before.
I’m going to stick with what I have already said I believe it is.
Could you give us the dimensions of the plate?

It came from a B-17G crash site. 43-38856, crashed April 23 1945.

Can I just ask why you think it is from a B-17G?
That said it does have the outline of one of the walkthrough compartment doors including possibly a hole for the door handle?
