B29s in the Boneyard

Looks like 3 hulks remain at or near China Lake. In addition to the lake and Echo range airframes sabrejet lists in post #8, there is one in the “museum” area, 44-70102 Here’s Hopin . Incomplete. Had the top cut open to retrieve the tunnels running through the bomb bay area for other museum aircraft (Seattle IIRC).

The Echo range aircraft was subject to severe overpressure from bomb blasts and is seriously “oil canned”. Incomplete.

I do know the Navy has gotten tired of dreamers and collectors asking if they can come and get a B-29, or parts thereof. The days of getting an intact airframe are long gone. If someone really had the money, I offer the airframes at Aero Trader, or several on outside display would be much better projects.

Maybe they thought you were asking for B29s!

The wrecked example in Post #6 is SB-29-70-BW s/n 44-69957. The nose of this aircraft was recovered by the US Aviation Museum at Inyokern a few years back.

The ‘missing’ white aircraft in Post #7 is B-29A-65-BN s/n 44-62134, which is/was on the Echo Range in the 1990s. It looked a bit healthier then:

The Washington is/was at Socorro, NM if memory serves. And one B-29 is still to be accounted for from China Lake. Google Earth search shows one other rather demolished example still on the ranges at the northeast end.

Is this where the remains of the last B29 Washington remain?

No, most of the survivors from that time have been preserved. Their histories are fairly well known.
Two currently fly, and another is at Duxford after flying the Atlantic.
Remember that China Lake was a weapons testing center not a “boneyard” in the commonly used sense.
