If anyone is in the mood to watch these magnificent old dinosaurs, get you down to Fairford between now and the 20th June.

And there does already exist a separate D-Day thread.

Personally I feel that it would be more appropriate if we took the time to consider what is being commemorated rather than the specific nature of the commemoration.
Absoloutely, I suspect everyone on this forum would agree. But as enthusiasts, we obviously want to know about the actual commemorations too.

Re 25
I don’t think that many of us are in any doubt about that.

Re 19
Don’t be clever Mike. I did say ‘at a pinch’. The B29 featured in WW2 unlike the B52s. Do read the comments properly – there’s a good chap !

Thank you but no need need Charlie, I was unclear. I guess it was just something I had on my mind.

Apologies Beny but it wasn’t clear. Consider my comment redirected to whomever.:)

What a stupid comment!!
A quote of another member and not my opinion Charlie.

Before this thread gets `moded` for being a mile off topic.
The US are sending a B-52, a present day representative of the USAF (USAAF), the UK are sending Tornadoes, a present day representative of the RAF. The BBMF (RAF) will be there with its UK WWII aircraft as will other privately operated UK aircraft. The US Aircraft are be represented by private C-47`s that have travelled over and other aircraft. Vulcan XH558 does not fit in to either of these categories and I see no reason why anybody would expect her to be there….. It would be nice though 🙂

What connection does the B-29 have to D-Day? Far more appropriate to see the C-47s that have come across from the US for the commemorations. If a B-17 was considered appropriate, there is one much closer to home that could have been booked.

… and also has commitments to xenophobic little Englanders this weekend.
What a stupid comment!!
The B17 would have been appropriate though……

Re 16
At the very least, they were around at the time.
For the Americans, I would have thought that one or two B17s would have been right. Or, at a pinch, the Confederate Air Force B29 – if available.
By: David_Kavangh - 4th June 2014 at 18:32
Sending a Lancaster, two Spits and a Dakota to Normandy on Friday seems far more appropriate……
By: benyboy - 4th June 2014 at 18:24
It does not have a multi billion Dollar budget to fund it going over…. and also has commitments to xenophobic little Englanders this weekend.

Additionally, in recognition of the legacy of the U.S. Eighth Air Force in the Allied invasion of Normandy in World War II, a B-52 will take part in the 70th anniversary D-Day commemoration in Graignes, France, June 7.
Good for them!
Too bad the Vulcan can’t go over to honor BCs contribution to the invasion effort.

6/3/2014 – OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE, Neb. — Three B-52 Stratofortresses flew to the U.S. European Command (USEUCOM) area of operations today to train and integrate with U.S. and allied military forces in the region.
During this short-term deployment, the multi-role heavy bombers will conduct training flights in the USEUCOM area of operations, providing opportunities for aircrews to sharpen skills in several key operational sets and become familiar with airbases and operations in the region. Additionally, in recognition of the legacy of the U.S. Eighth Air Force in the Allied invasion of Normandy in World War II, a B-52 will take part in the 70th anniversary D-Day commemoration in Graignes, France, June 7.

According to the BBC, the B52 deployment is in connection with D-Day commemorations.

Not really opperating, they go into Fairford about once a month when they exchange the aircraft/pilots. There are 3 in at the moment.

Are they operating the U2 from there at the moment as well.
Reason I ask is One Just flew over Wing Farm Warminster about 30 mins ago at a ( for a U2 ) low just above cloud tops Height.
