The B717 hasnt really been brought to the european market, it has only really been used in the states by airlines such as, airtran and midwest, and i was just wondering whether any of you have ever flown on one? If you have what were your thoughts of the plane?

Turkmenistan Airlines Orders Additional Boeing 717-200s

Turkmenistan Airlines recently concluded a definitive agreement for the purchase of two 717-200 airplanes, which will increase to five the number of the environmentally-friendly, short-haul 717s the airline operates.

The definitive agreement for the two twinjets, which is valued at approximately $78 million, was signed in the capital city of Ashgabat on May 16.

The airplanes, which will be configured for 120 passengers, are scheduled for delivery next year. The new 717s will join Turkmenistan’s fleet of three Boeing 717-200, three 737-300 and four 757-200 airplanes. The airline plans to operate the 717s on domestic and regional routes.

“The 717 is the perfect airplane for providing the traveling public with efficient, reliable, comfortable low-cost transportation.” said Doug Groseclose, senior vice president of Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “This member of the Boeing family continues to be a great asset to Turkmenistan Airlines and the people of Turkmenistan.”

Turkmenistan Airlines initiated a plan to modernize its fleet with Boeing jetliners in 1992, when the airline became the first in the Commonwealth of Independent States to purchase an airplane from Boeing.

Boeing has received firm orders for 155 717s and has delivered 118 since September 1999.

Same difference…

Bayern is german for Bavaria.

if you want to be really picky, mongu, BMW stands for ‘Bayerischer Motor Werke’, not Motor Works, although again, it does mean the same thing. ๐Ÿ˜‰ :p

The “B” in BMW means “Bayernische” not “Bavarian” Yes, I spend too long staring at the corner of my windscreen in traffic!

Though I guess it amounts to pretty much the same thing as Bayern is the State of which Munich is the capital, in the region of Bavaria.

More seriously, I believe the BMW/Rolls Royce joint venture is a thing of the past and the BR engines are mainly RR products these days.

I only flew on the 717 twice, and I thought it was a cracking aircraft. Infinitely preferable to a 737 – less cramped (2+3 seats), quieter, and heck – just nice, because it is different to the ubiquitous baby boeing.

right, Beamer engines on the 717…

The engines were originally a joint venture between BMW and Rolls Royce, hence them originally being designated ‘BMW Rolls Royce BR710’.

However, Rolls Royce bought BMW out of the deal, and the engines are now sold with just the Roller badge on them, although they retain the ‘BR’ designation.

Re Israeli 717’s, I thought there were some, but it apears not. :S

a couple of queries…

Does Olympic not now have 4 a/c?
Doesn’t the B717 have BMW engines in not RR?
Who’s the Israeli operator? Arkia?

I’ve flown on an MD90, which is basically a longer 717. It was allright, even though it was on UA’s hated rival, American. Bhoy, with me being partial to Bavarian Motor Works, I like to think of the 717’s as having BMW engines. ๐Ÿ™‚

Dozens of times. Spanair Link uses B717 in domestic flight and in my city airport conections to Madrid this model is used. In fact Iยดll be flying in a couple of weeks. Well nothing dramatic. Like a refitted DC-9, quieter and with more roomy racks, and digital buttons (flight attendant call, and lights switchs). Seats are quite confortable, but pitch (at least in Spanair Link) is not really good. Lighting gives a really welcoming look.

Is there not some Spanish operator as well? there’s definately an Israeli operator (although, wherther or not that qualifies as Europe is another matter).

But, frankly, without having travelled on a 717, my opinion of the MD-80 to travel on is unprintable, so my perception of the 717 isn’t very high (although it’s somewhat saved by having Rolls Royce engines ;))

Olympic aviation operates 2 of them. They are the only ones in Europe, I would imagine.
