In a book called “21st Century Jet” – a book about the developement of the B777 (author unknown sorry…) it was revealed that Boeing went to their major customers with a proposal for the next version of the 767-300 (to be called the 767-400, what else??)but the airlines wanted more capability in terms of pax carried, range, design etc., etc., and so the 767-400 evolved into an entirely new family of planes – the 777.
Now of course, Boeing have the 767-400 anyway. Point is, have they just re-invented their own wheel?? Does anybody know what is so different about the -400 we have now, from any of the 777-group? The 767-400 seems to me to be an expensive duplication.

RE: B767-400. WHY???
The 757-300 and 767-400 have been slow sellers so far, but can you remember when the both airliners were totally new products? It took them both quite some time before they started selling well, so I would not be surprised if the orders start coming in more frequently….Then again, the competition from Airbus is much stronger these days..

RE: B767-400. WHY???
We dont need a 767-400, infact look at all of Boeings aircraft, I would consider the 757,200, 767 200/300, 777, modern aircraft, but if you look at the 737 in any mark, its design is years old, same can be said for the 747, even in the 400 srs, its still an old design, you can only modernise for a while…for example how many times did Ford re work the Cortina ?? see what I mean, there comes a time when its the end of the road, Boeings proposals to further extend the 747-400 to challenge the A380 seem daft, do they not have the guts to design a completely new aircraft, at least Airbus have guts.
As for the 767 400, its a waist of time, same can be said for the 757-300.

RE: B767-400. WHY???
Not being one of Boeing’s bigger fans I find it hard to believe that the company is now relying on age-old designs in order to build its latest aircraft.
All the current production aircraft (except the 777) are simply old designs ‘glorified’ for the 21st Century market!
Having said this, I must admit that the 767-400 is the only airliner in the world where the pilot can be over the Atlantic and the people at the back still on the runway at Heathrow!

RE: B767-400. WHY???
Maybe the 767-400 is what the big customers wanted (Delta&Continental)? They probably don’t need as big plane as the 777 for some of their popular US internal routes, to Hawaii for example. Who knows…
