BA announces further 5800 job cuts

having already made 7000 redundancies in September, BA today announced further cuts, which will also see 5 long haul, and 5 short haul routes scrapped.
Also, many routes will be moved from LGW to LHR.

details are here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/business/newsid_1816000/1816551.stm

Meanwhile, Virgin Atlantic (according to today’s The Times) is to introduce extra services to China, Nigeria and the Carribean, and resume flights to Las Vegas and New York, which were suspended after September 11.

They can afford to keep their staff it’s just that apparently they need to make much more profit than they are making at the moment.

Obviously, taking 66% off of the price of a Concorde ticket has not worked!

I feel sorry for all the staff at BA who are to lose their jobs. As my Mum said yesterday, if they can afford to fly Concorde why can’t they afford to keep the staff???

Not a good day for British Airways. I wish all of my friends and colleagues at BA the very best in the future.

Once this operation has been carried out by 2004, it is believed that the 5,800 this year along with the 7,200 last year will mean that 1 quarter of the BA workforce is being made redundant.

And…

British Airways have almost been forced to withdraw the slogan, “The World’s Favourite Airline”. they are said to be looking for another. But were they ever the world’s favourite? Because I was never asked!

Poor Gatwick…..I long for the days of Dan Air and Air Europe. Pity BA forced Air Europe out and took control of Dan Air – they don’t like competition at BA do they? They have messed it up big time at LGW over the last decade – Bad management is one major factor. BA are showing their true colours and focusing on LHR – But LGW will bounce back, hopefully with a young forward thinking carrier (just like Air Europe was).

BHX seems to be safe with the majority of it’s routes, though it won’t be till April when we find out what will get the chop (if anything).

MAN is peforming quite badly on some routes, with the ERJ-145 replacing many former 737 flights.

Guernsey has lost its routes with Brymon to Bristol and Cardiff and Jersey has lost its route to the Isle of Man.The isle of Man’s LHR flights will switch to LGW.I haven’t heard anythng else about South west airlinks but i have a feeling Plymouth and Newquay may have lost the LGW routes. Its a sad day, shows BA’s commitment to its regional airlinks!
