BA heritage ads

I’ve just been looking at another magazine’s site (OK it was Flight International) and noticed that British Airways new ad campaign hits the streets tonight.

What has a modern ad got to do with historic aircraft? well have a look and decide for yourself.

They must be about due for a re-branding – 13 years since the current scheme came in.

..is adding a crest ‘rebranding’? I heard they were due for a completely new rebranded livery following the merger with Iberia. Is this it??:rolleyes:i

To Fly… To Serve… To scrap…

BA spends £400m on marketing. I wonder how much it would have cost to keep the Cosford aircraft in a good enough condition to warrant their future preservation. £40m? £4m? £400k? or £40k? Perhaps £40k would have gone a long way towards their upkeep! Oh, that £400m is just marketing. Not sure how much they spend on sponsorship or good PR?

Yup! The A380 will look fantastic with a blue tail and a lovely golden dickie bird ……

Lets hope it hauls in some new younger aviation enthusiasts, in the same manner as Thomas the Tank did for the Railway preservation movement.

Actually…. I think the ads are good – and it’s nice to see the crest make a comeback – that always did look good on the pale grey.

As usual kev you’re quite correct – however IMHO so far we’ve only had the ‘trailers’, the main ‘feature’ has yet to start! 😀

Plus we seem to be have ‘multiple-features’ running about these parts!! 😉

Loved the ad….thought it was great.

But if you really want to do some bashing, lets remember BA and BOAC and their boards did much to destroy the UK aircraft industry, destroying the VC-10 and Trident amongst others.

Still a good advert though….

Barley sugar – wonderful for the diabetic. Stops sickness and induces coma. A bit of a win win situation for the cabin crew.

Twin Otter.

No need to order popcorn, it’s only a short advert.

The BA Collection? It was a disaster. It appears to have been disposed of with unseemly haste. But, it should be remembered that Cosford were at least partly to blame. They were happy to have the aircraft when BA offered them. I remember when the new hall was being built it was said that no other aircraft would be exhibited outside. But the Neptune, Britannia and, presumably, the Hercules will never be housed inside. And aren’t they scheduled to have a Nimrod, VC10 and Tristar in the fullness of time?
Perhaps the ad is part of a new campaign where aircraft will be painted in retro colour schemes and ‘passenger handling’ will be returned to the days when it was ‘service’.
…… and the in-flight meal consisted of a barley sugar sweet. 😉

Don’t knock the Barley Sugar. Probably tastier than what I was served on my flight from Schipol to Kiev the other week. The McDonalds generation finally hits in-flight catering….yep, you guessed it, a cheeseburger !!!

If they are so proud of their heritage why was Concorde G-BOAB abandoned at Heathrow for so long?:(

They’re not. It’s an advert. Good for Shuttleworth (and I hope DX and the other operators) to scrape a few pennies from BA, but it’s no support for heritage, it’s purely a commercial transaction.

I can think of a good handful of airlines* with a significant commitment to aviation heritage and preservation to the level of flying one or more heritage aircraft; I’m sure posters can add to the list – BA are not among that group.

[*Lufthansa, Air Canada, Aer Lingus, South African Airways, arguably Qantas]

I love how all the pilots are walking out past propellers whizzing away and the 747 Captain has to wear a high viz vest! Elf and Safety!

A lot of work to make the new visuals using many real aircraft, top marks to the team who made the advert….however the voice over is poorly paced and seems inspired by a food advert for Marks and Spencers which has become a parody. And the very idea that passenger planes landed without lights ?

The story of what really happened to many early Uk airline pioneers is in the re published uncensored story of Capt Fresson and the airline he built up in Scotland which was destroyed by the government after WW2 to enable the forerunner of British Airways to dominate.

Rather an enjoyable advert that looked expensive and well produced.

I found the ending of the advert amusing. Concorde speeding past all the other aircraft in the sky at a fair rate of knots including the presently in service Boeing 747.

Showing that since Concorde’s retirement in 2003 the airline and passenger air travel has indeed gone backwards :diablo:

Progress eh……………
