BA has order 4 B777-200ER aircraft in the first step of it’s long haul expansion/replacement programme. The aircraft will start to be delivered from early 2009 onwards and an option for 4 more has been taken. BA are just releasing the news now, but the headline also states that the decision between the B777 and A330 offerings was a close one, and thus suggests Airbus is still in with a shot when the larger order is announced later in the yr for up to 30 new aircraft.
The ease of introducing the B777 aircraft into the fleet swung the decision according to Commercial Director Robert Boyle.

i may be wrong, and would like to stand corrected, but i read somewhere that BA has options on 99 A320 family to be firmed up at when ever they need them??

rdc1000, the press release I saw at the office today didn’t say that so thanks.
That’s interesting, with the 4 321s on order plus these that means we are 8 aircraft up on the present fleet. Wonder what they have in mind for them.
Thanks again,

Again, not certain, but in the ATI report a source at BA had talked about them replacing current aircraft that are to leave the fleet (see below), would that perhaps be the remainder of the original batch, or have these already been earmarked for replacement? Reading it though, it could just mean generic fleet replacement, along with the original order..so I’m non the wiser LOL.
“Our Airbus A320 fleet serves us well on our short-haul network from [London] Heathrow, so we are pleased to replace aircraft leaving our fleet with new A320s,” says BA commercial director Robert Boyle”

I imagine they intend to fly them to various destinations in order to make money with them………

The source states, that following this order, BA now has 14 on firm order, so I guess they are in addition.

There are already 10 320s on order for delivery during the period Nov 07 to Dec 08, G-EUUS to G-EUUX and 4 aircraft as yet unregistered.
What’s not clear to me is are the 4 mentioned today over and above these or is BA talking (spinning) about firmed-up options we’ve known about for some time as if they are new?
Any ideas?

They’ve also ordered a further 4x A320s for delivery from 2008.

Taken from
SEATTLE, Feb. 21, 2007 — The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] is pleased that British Airways has agreed to purchase four additional 777-200ERs, with options for four more. Boeing is delighted to be part of British Airway’s first step in expanding its long-haul fleet.
Boeing is working with British Airways to finalize the order.
No word on Engine selection…But at a rough guess it might possibly be Rolls Royce

BA favour Boeings on long haul, so this isn’t really much of a surprise.

I suspect few will be surprised by this announcment…?
