Sorry guys it’s more 320’s
New shorthaul aircraft orders
British Airways has ordered eight new Airbus A320 family aircraft for delivery 2008-2010.
The airline said the move is the first step towards a single shorthaul fleet across British Airways’ network.
The airline will also upgrade the Gatwick shorthaul fleet by replacing 14 Boeing 737s with Airbus A319 aircraft.
Willie Walsh, British Airways’ chief executive said: “We’ve made considerable progress at Gatwick, particularly on costs. Gatwick is an important part of our shorthaul strategy and replacing the older Boeing 737 fleet with Airbus aircraft will give us flexibility across both airports.”
British Airways currently has a shorthaul fleet of 67 Airbus aircraft. The order will boost the Airbus shorthaul fleet to 79 aircraft as a further 13 are on order and nine older A320s are due to leave the fleet in 2007-2008.
At Heathrow, the airline has the following shorthaul fleet: 33 Airbus A319 aircraft, 26 Airbus A320 aircraft, 8 Airbus A321 aircraft, 13 Boeing 757 aircraft and seven Boeing 767 aircraft.
I’m assuming the 14 737’s will be the -300s and -500s, just leaving the 19 -400s at Gatwick.

From what i have found out…
When the new Airbus’s are delivered, they will go straight to Heathrow.
The LGW operation, will get the oldest of the A319’s at LHR, when the new bus’s arrive from Toulouse.

They where looking at Mad Dogs to replace there 200’s but think they keep there 200’s for some time. Anyway great news for BA and Airbus just hope they hurry up and chose the A380 or the 747-8.

Given Willie Walshs past history with Airbus through EIN, something tells me he will favour this side of the pond.

It’ll be a shame to see the -300/-500 series going, but on the bright side it’s promising that BA are investing in LGW, there was talk not that long ago of it being scaled back dramatically.

Not sure I’d desribe them as new, and aren’t most of the 734’s leased ?
Im not sure about that mate.
Of course there not new aircraft i just meant it in the terms of getting more aircraft for there fleet.

Great to see BA making orders.
Could mean a influx of 737s for sale, could be a good chance for airlines such as Jet2.com who are after new 737s i belive, and European Aircharter who operate a fleet of 737-200s which are due for replacement.

I for one think BA will not bother with A380 and get more Boeing 777s and the New 747-800.
