As expected BA plumped for Embraers….
BA orders 11 Embraer regional jets for CityFlyer
Nicholas Ionides (22Dec08, 07:15 GMT, 97 words)British Airways (BA) has ordered 11 Embraer regional jets for use by its BA CityFlyer subsidiary.
Embraer says in a statement that the deal comprises six E-170s and five E-190SRs on firm order, plus options for three more E-190SRs.
The first 76-seat E-170 is due for delivery in the second half of 2009. Deliveries of the larger, 98-seat E-190SRs will start later, says Embraer.
BA had been evaluating replacements for some time for its Avro RJ100s and RJ85s that are operated by its CityFlyer unit. The new Embraer aircraft will be operated out of London City Airport.

Dan, it may be a bad news for the passenger point of view
I cannot imagine why replacing 146s with E-jet would be bad for the passengers in any way.
Doesn’t the air system in the 146 have a terrible reputation? In fact don’t they have a rather poor reputation for reliability in general?
And aren’t the E-jets incredibly comfortable from the passengers’ point of view?
Why would it be a bad thing to have no 146s left?

An hour on the ground in Shannon easily outweighs:
a) A long car journey from Canary Wharf to Heathrow
b) Long Check in times and queues at Heathrow (15 minutes at LCY, 40 minutes at LHR)
c) A long wait for immigration at JFK
Each flight already has around 50% of its seats guaranteed by some of BA’s biggest clients, so it is profitable before it even starts.

If you take the longest range variant and then remove three quaters of the seats, and stop at Shannon on the outbound leg I think you will find it is quite possible. The people at BA aren’t idiots, I think they know what they’re doing. ๐

Surely the runway at LCY won’t allow for the 318 to get airbourne with such a large fuel load.
The Clever boffins at London Airways have thought(??)that out and are giving the busy businessmen in the ludicrously expensive seats a :)free:) stop off on the tarmac at Dublin en route to fuel up!! I’m sure the busy businessmen will really enjoy sitting around in Ireland and not be at all worried about the important meetings,time being money etc… and give LA their repeat business!…..NOT!

Dan, it may be a bad news for the passenger point of view but an Embraer itยดs absolutely more cost effective compared to the old 146s. And business itยดs first for airlines.

Actually, yes they could if they wanted. The A318 is likely to be used for European routes in the future, with around the 100 seat+ mark, I know at least one airline considering them, and not for particularly short routes either.
BA has long been expected to order the E-jets though.

Personally, I think this is bad news. Flybe dumped the last of their 146s in october, now BA looks set to dump theirs by 2010, and doubtless CityJet (being Air France-KLM) will be updating their own fleet very soon. We’ll have none left!
