BA route overhaul

BA has announced that they are to modify their route network considerably over October.
Southampton to Jersey, and the brand new London City to Glasgow flights are being axed from the 25th and 24th of October respectively.
London City to Geneva, and to Edinburgh will instead be inserted.
The total list of lost routes next month is as follows:

Gatwick – Plymouth – Newquay
Plymouth – Bristol – Newcastle
Southampton – Belfast City
Southampton – Jersey
London City – Glasgow
Birmingham – Berlin
Birmingham – Copenhagen
Birmingham – Geneva
Birmingham – Lyon
Birmingham – Nice
Birmingham – Stockholm

BA is however not pulling out of Southampton as it may seem. The Dash 8’s will strengthen routes to Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Manchester.
Also BA are moving their Paris services to the new Terminal 2B at LFPG from the 26th of next month.

The Belfast and Jersey flights seem to have been axed because of competition with Flybe, however the new route from LCY to EDI runs alongside Scotairs one. This seems to be an excuse for the rapid retirement of the turboprop fleet more than anything though.

I flew Scotairways back to my home town (Dundee) from LCY a few years ago and they were very good, admittedly.

My worry is that BA will always automatically have a market share on any city pair they operate. There are going to be lots of current Scotairways EDI/LCY customers who are BA frequent flyer scheme members and will switch to their preferred airline, unfortunately. And BA will be operating a jet as opposed to the, albeit very fast, D38.

Scotair have a very good reputation on the route, my cousin fly’s with them all the time, however they have said they “welcome the competition” hmm, I don’t think so somehow!

I think that Scotairways do 9 rotations a day on EDI/LCY but will BA not be using a 146 daily x 3? If so, that will about double (if not more than double) the existing capacity on that particular city pair. Scotairways are going to have to lower their prices now, me thinks.

I feel sorry for them in a way. They don’t have many routes these days and BA are after a slice of the biggest one. Will Scotairways manage to compete? Have they got a good reputation on this route?

Flybe is increasing the frequency and capacity on the Jersey route and Aurigny has also applied to operate the route in competition. Quite ironic really that BRAL was given the route license in a three-way fight, yet is now leaving and the two airlines that had applied are now competing together.

Lot’s of businessmen use EDI-LCY I guess, it’s that kind of town. Big financial and government centre.

Isn’t the LCY-EDI route already massively served with about 12 rotations a day?

That’s two operators that have tried and failed to make Glasgow-London City a success. Scot Airways pulled out to concentrate on Edinburgh.
