Hi all, back after a lengthy absence and now working for Manchester Airport in T3!

It seems (from reading Pprune mostly) that the competition from the US airlines may have brought about the end of the BA flight, not to mention bmi with it’s links via the Star Alliance with United etc.

The downsizing of BA at Manchester has been naturally dramatic, but outside of the somewhat monopolosied London airports, just where can they fight toe-to-toe with other operators in the UK?

Seems to me that British Airways are merely retreating to where they can operate a comfortable profit.

Are BA trying to run down the business just now to attract a takeover…? They certainly appear to be doing a good job of it.

Not at all. BA looks set to have made more money in the past financial year than at any other time in its history…

Its the end of regional services full stop really, not just long haul. The only flights from the regions go to London.

There is no hope in hell of Open Skies ever taking on the route, that was just something said by a BA manager to pacify the Aviance team at Manchester.

So with MAN-JFK converted to LGW-JFK does that see the end of regional long haul services from British (London) Airways…? Will a US airline that seem to operate UK regional services so much better step in with a MAN-JFK route and any truth in the rumour ‘Open Skies’ plan to operate out on MAN at some stage… ?

Profit wise MAN-JFK has been going backwards for a while for BA. Economy yields got hit once DL came onto the route and the general economic conditions stateside hit westbound traffic. Throw in the fuel rise and there was only one way this was going to go. DL/CO have been suffering too so as long as there is no immediate rush to throw more seats back into the market, economy yields should start to rise.

So essentially BA have been hunted out of MAN by competing US airlines…?

MAN-LGW-JFK or
MAN-LHR-JFK which one would you prefer to go via.

My choice is the LGW choice so it is good news for me. Anyway it is not all bad news rumours are the Open Skies will be taking over from British Airways on the MAN-JFK run if not then i think LH or someone with a good rep will take this run up!!!

Good news. Could be a good move by BA adding a LGW-USA service now that most of the carriers have moved over to LHR.
