I have just booked a flight to Los Angeles in February and was surprised to see that Terminal 1 is the departing terminal, I thought it would have been T4
is this a recent change? Also does anyway know what A/C they are using on this route. I am assuming it is a B777.

There isn’t enough ramp space in any terminal! The official reason was the connecting passenger issue. Some flights have up to 80-90% connecting pax. The move has actually made T4 more congested, because a lot of ex-T1 shorthaul flights moved in the opposite direction.

I don’t disagree with this but surely BA could move other airlines out eg Sri Lankan, KLM, as they are the terminal’s ‘Key’ airline?
I remember when T4 first opened it was just BA and KLM (& Air Malta???) but I suppose things are a lot busier now.

All of those reasons and according to my LHR DVD i got last week its also because there isnt enough ramp space at T4.

It is showing up as a 747-400. In March 2004 BA switched some longhaul flights from T4 to T1 to aid connecting passengers and thus avoiding a terminal change at Heathrow for those flying in on feeder short haul routes.

BA flights from LHR to Hong Kong, Johannesburg, Los Angeles, San Francisco & Tokyo were moved to Terminal 1 early last year. I assume that these flights have a large number of connecting passengers from Domestic/European airports so would ease the transfer process. Both flights should be on B747-400; all long haul flights from T1 use these a/c. The B777s live at T4(and some at LGW)

B747-400 i think, i think BA primarily use thier 777 from T1
