BAA ABZ £60m vision

Hot on the heels of the runway extension being approved by councillors, comes the revised Masterplan for ABZ for the period up until 2030:

* Initial £10m 2-yr development plan, including the aforementioned runway extension, plus an expanded international arrivals hall. This suggests at least one new stand
* £60m spent at ABZ over the next decade
* Estimated 4m passengers by 2015, with as many as 5.9m by 2030 (this is an UPgrade of the outline plan, due to continued strong passenger growth, was originally 3.6m & 5.3m passengers respectively)
* 2m international visitors by 2030

The extended international arrivals hall will include:
– larger customs & immigration hall
– improved baggage reclaim (BADLY needed!!!)

One half approx of the 300m extension of the runway will be built, the other half at a later date. The Plan also recommends safeguarding a further 100m to the south for further runway expansion.

The hope is to bring destinations throughtout Europe into reach, & also *whisper it* USA!!

ONE of the stands in the future will be expected to accomodate a B747 or B787-sized aircraft.

Cargo is also expected to increase from 5,300 tonnes in 2005 to as much as 8,800 tonnes by 2030.

Certainly an exciting vision for ABZ, remains to be seen if all the plans & expected growth come to fruition. Things are booming at the moment!

Andy Flower (ABZ MD) said something interesting in the P&J newspaper yesterday.

Apparently there are 55 people daily that jet off from ABZ to Houston via other airports (ie. London airports, or AMS).

So demand is there, but NOT for a daily flights from those figures. Maybe once, twice a week, UNLESS they are looking at an “all business” operation on the likes of a BBJ (eg. Privatair).

Definately great news for Aberdeen. I agree with you that the baggage reclaim hall needs to be improved urgently.
