Okay so some of you older than me may have seen this when it came out (was it shown on UK TV?) but I’ve just spent the weekend watching the first series – which has just been released on UK DVD – HMV will sell it to you for £34.99 – much better to go to ebay and get it for a tenner!
Bits of corny dialogue aside – the flying is great 5-6 corsairs, B-25s, L-5s, even a Grumman Duck – twice, plus C-47, Wildcat (static) and the Tora Vals, Zekes and Kates – lovely attention to detail at airstrip/atoll, discarded drop tanks, crew huts etc….
WELL worth a butchers…. have heard of it on WIX before but never seen it and didnt realise it was produced by Stephen J Cannell- the man behind the A-Team ….recommended – 😀
am saving Piece of Cake for a rainy afternoon (remember watching it on the TV when it first aired – looking forward to see how its aged!)

Well, Robert Conrad did a good job and I would have to admit it was entertaining. 😀 Besides you have to love all of those wonderful Corsairs! :diablo:

I’ve seen it about a year ago, ordered it at http://www.dvdboxoffice.com/ (Canada)
I loved it too 😀

Did you not notice the occasional Spit/Buchon shot from Battle of Britain sneaking in there? See – there ARE Brits in it! :p

As I recall the episode he played an Aussie coast watcher… 😀
Too bad they didn’t get a few Spits in it…it would have made for a good “rival” episode like they did with te USAAF units…(P-38s and perhaps P-51s?).
My comments about the Brits in their Spits was a slightly sarcastic reference to the recent posts (about the proposed “Dam Busters” remake among others) that made that charge against virtually every American war film ever made…even ones…like Black Sheep Squadron…where the Brits wouldn’t have necessarily been.
The show was so far fetched they could have been Me-109’s instead of P-38’s and/or P-51’s……………………. 😮

There were no Brits in it…..wrong….Peter Frampton is, as I recall, British….and he appears in it.

Sooo…what….since the 214 squadron aren’t flying Spitfires in place of their Corsairs it suddenly gives the appearance that the Yanks won the WHOLE WAR by themselves I guess…is that what I’m to understand? I’m not sure, maybe I’m fuzzy on my history…but I don’t RECALL the Brits flying from Vella la Vella with the Black sheep at any time during the war…

I believe a few episodes did have members from the New Zeeland and Australian Amred Forces. That said, you could hardly take the show seriously with hardly anything in the show reflecting the true exploits of VMF-214! Really, its to bad that they just didn’t use a fictitious Squadron?

I sat and watched the first disk last night, and I must say I really rather enjoyed it! 🙂

Just remember that it’s not supposed to be a documentary.
The later seasons got a bit silly with a bunch of nurses that look more like “Charlie’s Angels” than any real nurses in WWII.
And yes we know there are no Brits in it.
I’m sure it wasn’t intended to give anyone the idea that the Yanks won the war by themselves. 😀

Have had the first ten episodes for about a year now…still waiting for the next batch to come out (there were 36 episodes if I recall)…one episode features Boyington squaring off one vs. one against a japanese named Harachi, interesting episode….another features 2 P-38 pilots attached to the Black sheep (one of the planes was owned at the time by Denver’s own John Deahl, who died in it in a crash in Salt Lake)…have’nt heard yet when they plan on releasing the rest…anyone else?

I don’t think it was shown on terrestial TV…….
I remember watching it on cable TV (can’t remember which channel, probably SKY?) back in the early 1980’s….. 😮
