According to an article in the Heathrow Skyport newspaper, BAA have announced plans to close the Visitors Centre on 4th June to make way for a new staff recruitment, induction and training centre. 🙁
BAA spokesman said:
“We appreciate the Visitor Centre is a popular venue for aircraft enthusiasts and families, and we are hoping to provide alternative viewing facilities at the airport, subject to security restrictions and other considerations”

Well could be worse… Could be like in France where photography at airports is now an offence…
maybe BAA at EGLL might take an oppertunity to set up proper facilities like at EGCC but some how i doubt it 🙁

What is it with BAA and the closing down of viewing areas for the public? First it was the heathrow viewing gallery (which was an excellent viewing place) then it was Gatwick viewing area. And now a possible closure of the remaining viewing area for Heathrow. That just sums it up really. And its surprising that Manchester airport actually welcome people to their viewing area to be the “eyes and ears” of the airport, where as with BAA, viewing areas seem to be non existant and of no importance what so ever.

Myrtle Av. would be good, but I’ve got a feeling its public land and would be impossible to build on.
The visitors centre is dire for viewing and particularly photography. One good thing that will come of it as that now BAA cant just brush off any complaints about lack of viewing facilities with the old incredulous viewing centre argument! Hopefully something will get done soone rather than later…

it wouldn’t surprise me if they close it. shame. they only recently closed the road between the main airport and the maintenance area so no getting real close to aircraft anymore. 🙁

Why not place a centre at the park on Myrtle avenue. The spotters go there anyway, but at least then the spotters would have some shelter for the rain. Won’t have to cost a lot, just a prefab shed or something. As long as it has a loo and a drinks and snacks machine I am happy with it!

Well to be honest the viewing gallery isn’t exactly great – so a new area would, in principle, be good. However “subject to security restrictions and other considerations” whether one will actually appear is a completely different matter.
