Awesome weekend thanks to TEXANTOMCAT, we really had a great time at DX on saturday (we were actually sitting in the tank bank but couldnt see any of u guys!!), then a superb sunday in Brunters and Hendon (havent been there since 2000!). The great pictures of our forum mates say it all about the Legends show, but there was something i really didnt enjoy and I wanted to share it with u: do u find the “self made fence” a proper attitude during an airshow? I wonder if these chaps and the frontline stepladders do care about the other spectators.. One of the most egoist and rude things I’ve ever seen at airshows.

what’s the biggest airshow at OW, or better the one u cant miss? I’ve been there in january with Ben and there was such a great atmosphere despite nobody was flying!
Alex
Try August 7th. 😉

Can you elaborate?
Are you saying they were attempting to hire out those positions?
Moggy
not to hire but to say reserved space for saturday, note encapsulated in plastic. First come lucky man/person should be the way. Did hear a request for ladder users to do so from the rear of the crowd line over the P.A. treated with the usual distain I expect by a majority of users I expect!

Yep, You Cannot Beat OW!
You have not lived until you’ve been to Old Warden. Irrespective of the crowds, there is always a view. The best in the UK. All of the FP regulars will vouch for the uniqueness of OW. Flightline walks available, hangers open, approachable workforce, and improved cuisine.
Couldn’t agree more Roger.
With OW, you just turn up, park and that’s you set up for the day. 🙂
No need to have to walk miles to find a place to watch the display and lug all your stuff with you. 🙂
And not a step ladder insight!
As much as I like DX, everyone is treated the same at OW – no Gold or Platinum pass enclosures etc. And it’s nice to see the pilots and their families using the restaurant and other facilities too as opposed to having a special tent or seperate place for them to go for the day.
This kind of thing is part of what makes it so special. 🙂
And the entry prices are damn reasonable too! 😀
Cheers

Old Warden has the great advantage that the area where the cars park is on gently sloping ground which acts as a natural ‘stagger’, and so many people stay by their cars and get an excellent view of the planes in the air, if not of take-offs etc. As wind breaks and stepladders are banned and the fence is now very long, there is very little of the trouble that has excited the forum over the last few days about Legends.
The Flight line tours are much better than at legends, as you can get right up close, as long as you don’t touch. However, the planes are parked much closer to the fence than the planes are to the tarmac at Legends so many people don’t bother, which is a shame.

Bit off topic, but whats the crowd situations like at Shuttleworth? Might have a car this year (only just old enough to drive) so would like to pop down one day. Is there a flightline walk like at Legends? Personally i prefer smaller airshows with not many crowds but good atmosphere

Shuttleworth have banned them, it’s about time DX did as well. At 0810 on Saturday there was hardly a space to be seen on the fence at the Tank-Bank, and some enclosures had fenced off acres for 2 chairs and were’nt occupied until lunchtime. This is plainly silly. I think I’ll chain my windbreak up now for the Autumn Air-Day!
By: Rlangham - 12th July 2005 at 18:54
I’ve seen that sort of thing at Bruntingthorpe, its one of the reasons the only airshow i’ve ever been to is Coventry in 2003 i think it was. Funnily enough, don’t recall seeing any chairs and tents padlocked to the fence there, wonder why
By: italian harvard - 12th July 2005 at 18:34
..not to mention the photographers on the flightline who had special “accompanied duxford press” fluo jacket.. they kept on hanging around between the courtesy line and the planes taking their time to take pics and not bothering about ppl who paid 4 quid to get not as near as them.. I am sure they were all professionals, but maybe once again the DX organizers might give them a dedicated time slot next year…

So it would seem that bolt croppers are in order for shows in the future just to get the chairs off the fence, some people are so sad it’s unreal, having to claim their own part of the flightline…. Pathetic.

I think that’s the same big green brolly I was tempted to set light to at Kemble this year…
By: Learning_Slowly - 12th July 2005 at 10:17
Yes but it was very windy you can understand why they all needed those windbreaks can’t you.
