HI All,
It’s been now 30 yrs since I last finished my last airfix model of the 1/24th spitfire and considering taking up the hobby up again.
I have been reading a lot about the hobby via the internet and amazed how much has changed yet the basics remain the same, some things I am a little confused with due to age, hopefully as ever the good people of the forum will be able to help me out.
Paints All there ever was in the good old days were the good old humbrol or revel enamel paint tins. Now I have seen both enamel and acrylic paints. Can anybody explain to me the difference and whets best to use? Also whets the best paints to use for spraying.
Decals Are there any available now for 1/24th scale aircraft?
As the last kit I brought and completed was the airfix 1/24th scale spitfire Mk1a, and I would like this to be my first kit to start with again, I can see that there are 2 spitfires in this scale now, the old Mk1a and the MkVb, would like to hear from anyone who has purchased both and can give me the heads up, is the MkVb kit the same as the Mk1a with extra parts or is a completely new kit itself?
Many thanks
Jason

Hello gentlemen,
Thank you both for replying and comments on the best paints to use.
I am going to buy a copy of the scale modelling step by step guide for beginners, looks exactly what I need as its been so many years since my last model and have much to relearn.
Paul..thank you for the heads up on the britmodellor website, looks fantastic and will certainly be joining up.
Derekf…Thank you for comments on the 1/24th scale spitfire kit, certainly sounds that buying the MkVb kit is better than buying the Mk1, as might be able to make either version, though may end up buying the Hurricane in the same scale just for the kidney shape Exhaust stacks to put on the mk1 spitfire, this is what I did on my last build and used the fishtail type on a Mk 2 hurricane model afterwards. Always thought that the merlin engine model in the Hurricane was far better in both detail and fit than the original merlin in the spitfire, did airfix ever change it?
Picked up a copy of the Modellers datafile by SAM publications on the merlin spitfire, only had it a few days but finding its very interesting and useful, can you recommend any further reading?
Having thought about it I think it would be best if I cut my teeth on the 1/72 spitfire as like here

Before embarking back into 1/24, suppose its a bit like riding a bike.:D

Acrylics for me too. No smell (unless you use Tamiya), wash your brushes in water and they dry within a few minutes. I can paint a three colour camo scheme in an evening.
Xtracrylix are all gloss to ease decal application, then you apply the varnish that you want.
I can’t comment on spraying as I don’t use an airbrush. I’ve used Tamiya spray cans and they work very well.
The 1/24 Spitfire is basically the same kit with extra propeller blades, spinner, decals etc to make a Vb. I have one in the loft and I keep thinking about it then remind myself it’s a 40 year old kit. If you can stretch to it, I would recommend a Tamiya 1/32 Spitfire IX by all accounts an excellent kit (again, I have one in the loft that I keep hauling out, looking at then putting it back. One day maybe….)
