I have received infromation that the Bader collection is to be auctioned as one entire collection and not as individual items so as to maintain to integrity of the collection. However, checking the lots list again today I noticed that Bader’s unique Alvis car (and probably the most attractive item of the collection) has been withdrawn from the sale.

No explanation is given why. Any ideas?

Personally I think there must be people with more money than sense.

Be thankful….and enjoy. 🙂

Of course if the Bader stuff doesn’t interest, or the 160 K price tag is just a tad out of the pocket money

how about

“A collection of silver and other artifacts belonging to Adolf Hilter and Eva Braun, Private Treaty Sale – Offers in excess of £55,000”

personally i think there must be people with more money than sense.

By strange coincidence, I visited RAF UXBRIDGE today (Thurs) on Official business, and amoung other things during the day, I was included on a tour of the 11 Group ‘Bunker’ (an extremely interesting and enjoyable visit..thanks Hazel), and the offices I was visiting turned out to be the old Hospital facilities where Sir Douglas was during 1931! Sadly I did not have my camera with me on the trip (my backside has been sore all day where I have been kicking myself), but the little diversions of the day made a somewhat tedious job far more enjoyable. Thanks to all those who made it possible. I shall have to watch Reach for the Sky again this weekend just so I can say ‘Been there’ when they cover RAF Depot Uxbridge. If I had had the time, I could have driven down to the Pantiles from Uxbridge for a pot of tea (cream or plain?)!!

Being at Uxbridge also enable me to look at the block & room where Sqn/Ldr Henry MAUDSLEY, (one of the Dam Busters Flight Commanders) was billeted when he joined the RAF in June 1940 after leaving Eton, and it was here that he carried out his basic training, so a double whammy for me today!!:D 😀

BTW, I did ask the MO if they wanted their crutches back, and they said they would think about it, but they did’nt think they had a leg to stand on after all this time!:dev2: :dev2:

Keith

Just had this reply from the auction house that helps not a bit, spending 160K will surely require more proof than a name witten on the leg?

Thank you for your enquiry with regards to the Douglas Bader collection. I believe the leg has his name on as well, I can confirm this. None of the items are for sale individually. Offers are invited at £160,000 and above.

In storage since the mid-1930s: I wouldn’t open it if I were you, though!

**********************************************************

Maybe I got the bloke’s name wrong. Now I think about it, I think that he was a Welshman from the States. Jones from Indiana, or something like that!

Its a good job I was too busy to look at the remains of the other ark he said he had for sale. Something about it being of the covenant. It didn’t go for it as it didn’t sound very seaworthy to me. He said that he was going to put it on eBay!

I’d check the provenance on this one…..my Biblical studies are virtually non – existant but wasn’t the Biblical Ark supposed to be of gopher wood, or the Baylonian one Cedar (Cypress) or the Assyrian one Reeds

I’d say you’ve been had there,

Chris

It seems that you can’t trust anyone these days. Next time I see that Abraham bloke down the pub, I’ll tell him I want my money back. Recently I bought this bit of oak from someone who said that it had been passed down to them by some bloke called Noah. I thought that I might use it in the rebuild of a classic wooden boat………………………………………..

Anything is possible!

CJH.- Come now, have you no vision?

The warbird restorers can do wonders these days ! Whole Spitfires have arisen from no more than a single rivet ( and that had to be replaced cos it was magnesium)

You may remember the auction last year of the ‘wings’ once owned by Guy Gibson and allegedly presented to Barnes Wallis. Well I bought them and for what it’s worth I believe they are genuine (everything else in the auction was). It is easy on this forum to knock these auction houses and joke about where these things might have come from but while you are doing this there are some very genuine WW2/RAF items slipping away in to private hands. I have offered my ‘wings’ to the RAF museum at Hendon and they have been most interested in displaying them.

Item 4 is particularly fitting for those of us who meet up after Legends each year.

What is the actual date of the auction. Is it indeed an auction?

A Private treaty sale. So is that saying the whole lot goes to the best offer over £160k.

don’t really think you could do much with it

A piece of airframe fabric 5″ x 3″ silver framed and with the inscription BULLDOG 14.12.1931.

have to agree about the Kenley reference though….thouroughly bad show on the part of the auction house. Doesn’t actually inspire confidence in their provenancing
