I was recently given a whole load of Aviation books and have only just got around to sorting them out. There are some great titles amonst them that will be very useful reference. I was however going to give any duplicates of books that i already had to a friend, one of which is Baders ‘Fight for the sky’, I already had a hardback copy and I knew that he had no copy. I though i would just compare the condition and obviously keep the better one, which turned out to be my original. When i had a quick flip through the ‘new’ one i found that it had been signed by no other than Douglas Bader. So which one did i keep ????.

RE: Bader book
Signatures are valuable to a number of different collectors and in a number of ways. There are autograph hunters who will pay for signatures regardless of who or what the person did, they want them just because they were famous.
There are collectors who just want signed books, again regardless of who are what the person did.
Some collectors focus on a particular theme, such as aviation or sport.
The important thing now is that since Douglas Bader died some twenty or so years ago there will not be too many of them around for sale anymore. At a guess, I would put the price at somewhere around £100. You only have to look at rises in the values of secondary market aviation prints to know that some, especially if the signature is rare, can increase in value dramatically.
The good thing in this case is that the book has gone to someone who knows about Douglas Bader and will probably cherish the book for years to come.

RE: Bader book
I’ve got a signed copy of the book written by Ray Holmes – he was the pilot who rammed the Do17 (he had run out of ammo) which crashed on Victoria Station in London during the BoB – what a star!
I know it is genuine ’cause he signed it in front of me!

RE: Bader book
The autograph is genuine as best i can tell, i have checked it against others.I have no intention of selling it, but i wonder what price it would attract.

RE: Bader book
Be sensible, the autographed one (if it’s genuine) is probably going to be valuable. But I suggest you get the signature authenticated. The Air Historical Branch are bound to have Bader’s signature for comparison.
