Hi Guys,
In issue 125 of After The Battle Andy Saunders made a report on the possibility that Douglas Bader was shot down by Buck Casson. On page 20 it says that ‘World Fire TV’ were making a series of programmes for release in 2005, including an episode about this story.
Does anyone know when it will be on ?
Thanks,
Andy.

I arrived back from Sandown tonight to a techincal request message from World Fire.
It seems they are still working on this.
That was a fascinating piece in ‘After the Battle’ magazine.
I would have thought the strength of supporting arguement and detailed research would have made Bader’s shooting down by Casson more a probability rather than a possibility.

24hrs too late but flicking through Sky channels last night I came across “Gladiators of World War 2” on UKTV History. Programme was about Fighter Command. The Bader flypast film was included together with a variety of other interviews with him and other members of “The Few”. Might be worth checking to see if it will be repeated.

I was working in the control tower as a J/T radar fitter at Cottesmore 1962-63 and do remember we had one BoB Day, but not any details, I was probably too busy! My main memory of it was clearing up tons of rubbish the day after!
I think it was earlier than that, it was possibly the day the Vulcan crashed at Syerston, 1959? we caught the train from Nottingham to Oakham then caught a bus.
The traffic jam to get in stretched all the way from Oakham which makes me wonder whether people knew it was a special occasion, we learnt about the Vulcan on route, we usually went to Syerston which makes me wonder why my old man took a lot of trouble to get to Cottesmore, I presume he knew Bader would be there.
There was a fantastic show at Cottesmore one year when the weather was appaling but the Black Arrows flying Hunters performed at low level during a thunderstorm, I hid in a hangar.

Moggy, the situation not the guy was “sorted out”. There’s an important distinction, and I’d disagree, it wasn’t an hour that could be regarded as “fine” by a long chalk.
No, it wasn’t at your behest, it was the personal initiative of a couple of people who saw quite how damaging it was and who had the maturity and diplomacy to resolve it rather than engaging in a protracted bunfight.
Rob
You are entitled to your view.

… a couple of forum members who worked pretty hard to calm this whole matter down.
Rob
Not at my behest.
I thought this was one of the Forum’s finest hours. The guy needed sorting out.
Don’t suppose I’d do the same today. With power comes responsibility as Karl Marx or Alexander the Grape once said.
@ Adrian – No worries 🙂

Whilst I did once have a sig relating to this fable, I think you might be confusing me with Alastair George and his
“W/C D Bader . On holiday Skegness 1941 . Honestly .”

Well at least it explains some flamin’ cryptic sigs Moggy (? – was it you? or am I blaming you unfairly?) had a while back!

Which remains current.
Meanwhile, revisiting the sad tale I see my brief period of fame within it has been curtailed 🙁

In those days B o B airshows were broadcast live on ITV on saturday afternoons, I know this because I looked up, saw the camera and stuck my tongue out, this act of supreme subtelty and wit was witnessed by some of my brothers mates on TV, question is, has any of this footage of Bader survived, as has any of those airshow films from that period, is anyone on here an archivist with ITV.
Bader on film.
type “Douglas Bader” into the search at www.britishpathe.com nets a dozen or so films, which you can pull stills from.
Yes, it’s free for the low res film download.
There’s a film at a Battle of Britain display. Your tongue may be available in low res B&W, Pete. 😉
Cheers
Moggy, you should know better.

I remember going to a B o B airshow at Cottesmore in the early 60’s or late 50’s, Johnny Johnston was station commander and Douglas Bader flew in in a light aircraft, taxied right in front of us and heaved himself out in true Kenneth More style, parked either side of his plane was a Spitfire and the Hurricane ‘The last of the Many’ painted blue, with the starter truck which is now at Old Warden, I believe. Bader and Johnston greeted each other warmly and disappeared, presumably to the mess.

I’m sure that we witnessed a flypast by the THUM flight Mosquitoes, 3 of them, painted silver with yellow bands, unfortunately we haven’t got any photos from that day, something must have gone wrong with my brothers Brownie, any info on this.
