BADER SPIN-OFF!?

So…is/was Douglas Bader’s Spitfire under that lake? Well…some of the Bader team have now been back to France to investigate certain underwater locations in the vicinity. Watch this thread for some interesting discoveries and photographs later today……! Andy Saunders

IDENTITY OF ME 110

From all available evidence it seems likely that the identity of the recovered Me 110 is that of Stb I/ZG 1 lost on 26 May 1940 when shot down South East of Calais. Oblt Konrad Martin (Tech.Off.) Killed and Fw Herbert Kraft Pow, wounded. Andy Saunders

Sorry guys, uploading on this site is not as straightforward as all the other sites I use. Probably finger trouble + a new computer set up. Anyhow Mark is doing his best for me as we speak.
When I asked Andy, he said he would ask his son to help. Dumkoff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bader Spin off

More Me 110 pics from France, showing pond recovery first, then onto the nearby crash site, and the ‘final finish’ picture.

It rained hard all morning but the afternoon was perfect for outdoor activities.

(Andy, shall we show the DB crash site picture as a ‘Spot the impact point’ competition ?)

Well, we are keen to find a home for the tail section parts. We are keeping the DB’s and props.

Yes…Bf 110 it certainly is! A bit battered, but literally a truck load of airframe in pond including tail section, elevator, both fins etc and outer wing spars etc. In a field about half a mile away we recovered both DB 601-A engines from about 12 ft to 15ft. I have seen many 601’s come out of the ground in my time but never any as good as these. Both were gleaming, still with sump plates and engine data labels attached and one still had prop hub ATTACHED to the front and with the Mercedes Benz badge still in place. The other had prop detatched, but with two blades in the hub. Aircraft was found when we followed up other leads arising out of the Bader programme and investigated aircraft wreckage reported to be in a pond. Aircraft was probably a casualty from ZG 1 lost on 25 May 1940 but we are working on i/d. Thought forum members would like to see these images and I think XTangoMike will post others later.
