Ah it is quite comforting to find this thread re-appear on page 1 again, like an old friend . . .it’s more familiar than my favourite pair of socks! 😀

Bit of an institution, really, although some might reasonably argue that many of those posting on this thread should be in one!!! Andy

I have just finished watching the Wildfire/Channel Four production on the Bader Spitfire program thanks to one fine individual from the forum and was very impressed with its content. Great television and its nice to see documentaries still being produced on the Second World War. My complments to the production team and Andy Saunders for a first class production and what tremendous research went into the program. Working here in television news I can tell you getting a chance to be part of a production like this is a great and rare opportunity. Sure hope this story will be offered on DVD and will make it way across the big pond for a US audience to see. The story in many ways is very similar to that of Maj George E. Preddy Jr and his being downed by friendly fire. Some individuals here in the US with the 352nd Fighter Group Association had tried to locate the final resting place of the Majors last “Cripes A’ Mighty”. Bader was indeed a very complex individual but one can’t deny his bravery and his accomplishents with the RAF and after the war with his foundiation. BlueNoser352 was glued to the telly on this one and will watch it again many times , having read and collected many books on this man , it was a nice addition for those of us who study and admire the men who flew in this war. Hope we see more programs like this ! On fine body of work here ..congrats from a Yank across the big pond !

I had you more as Harrison Ford or Stewart Grainger…! 😀

Harrison Ford – I have always admired the way he dealt with the sword wielding bandit in Raiders of the Lost Ark. A revolver beats a sword any day.

Actually, I think the TV company have decided that a documentary on this thread would make an ideal subject! Seriously…I think the prog may well be seen on overseas networks. Andy

Well it had laughs, tears, pathos, bathos, the famous nude scene on page 15, the heartfelt denials on page 17, well crafted insults, simmering passions, a star who although dead was challenged in the limb department, all sorts of expert commentary, cute cats (well my cat was looking over my shoulder at one stage) not to mention more plot twists than the Iraq war.

If Larry Olivier was still with us I vote that he plays me.

The radio transmission transcript was published in my ‘Bader’s Tangmere Spitfires’ (1996) and in Johnnie Johnson’s ‘Winged Victory’ (1995).

Andy Mac – Tangmere’s article in ‘After The Battle’ mag – issue 125 – has a transcript of the Radio Log between 1101 and 1224

There is a radio transmission log from the Beachy Head monitoring station for the Bader day (9 Aug 1941) at the RAF Museum, but it is a rarity and possibly was kept because of the “significance” of the day? Andy

I remember a book that had a written transcript of possibly Bader’s last engagement over France – I can’t remember which book it was . . .do any of these survive ? If there is a transcript that survives what else would it reveal ?

These would be recordings then I expect, or not ?

Andy.

Mark & fellow FlyPast forum members…wow! read with great interest the program on Sir Douglas Bader’s aircraft and the documentary. Having read many books on the man and things I have here on this forum over the years..sure hope this makes it over here so we can see it in the USA. It took about a year before “Spitfire Ace” made it over here on History International ..so perhaps we can keep our fingers crossed. One of the great leaders in the RAF and a man I admire for his refusal to give up . We could use more men like him in todays world. A salute to this production company for doing this documentary..at least you guys are still keeping the memory and history alive of this time period. Have enjoyed this forum for years and a great place to learn history from a great group here ! Was hoping to head over from the Oct Duxford airshow but could not make it happen this year.! Wanted to get in a visit to Bodney and check in with my favorite airfield from a time long ago…anybody driven by the base lately and what is the current status of the old control tower ? Thanks and hope all will have a good week !

Mmmm…! Well, I have to say that whilst some questioned the archaeological/historic importance of the digs relative to the Bader incident I seriously have to wonder what was proved by finding the foundations of a pillbox, AA site and E Pen at Hornchurch. Beats me what it proved or what we were able to learn or discover. Or did I miss something? Each to his own….!! :diablo: Andy

Hmmmmmm……. I had the same reservations when I saw that program last year. But then I’m only a HAAAAAAAWWWWWWKKKK SPPPPPITTTTT!!!!! archaeologist.
