BAE 146 / AVRO RJ – LCY

After a couple of recent trips out of LCY on the old work horse Avro RJ, I was wondering if it’s days were ever going to be numbered?

I always believe that LCY London City Aiport gave the BAE 146 a new lease of life, up until recently it was the only 100 seater range jet that could get in and out of the airport and seems to be in operation with a multitude of airlines for this very purpose. But with the advent of the new generation Embraer ERJ 170-195 and A318 jets being type rated for the airport then no doubt it’s a matter of time before these old Avro jets are swapped for the more fuel efficient newer aircraft?

Obviously if this was the case it would be very sad to see these excellent aircraft go, when walking up to board the aircraft there is something nostalgic about seeing the word AVRO written on the side of the aircraft.

Has anyone any inside or expert knowledge on the future use of the 146’s out of LCY?

Not to mention the “Whispering Giant”, i.e. the Britannia!

Now that was quiet!

Outside yes but depending where you were seated it could be very noisy inside due to prop wash hitting the fuse.

I’ve travelled on the 146 a couple of times and it was nosier than the Viscount

A lot of wind rumble especially just behind the wing ๐Ÿ™‚

Ship 741: You bet flaps are noisy inside… and the landing gear “clunks” nicely, when extending.

The airbrake is very noticeable, as well.

But this plane is a real delight to be flown in ๐Ÿ™‚

I remember the Lockheed Tristar being branded as “The Whisperjet” by Eastern Airlines in the 1970s. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

I have read some where that about 25 of this aircraft have now been converted into ABJ (Avro business jets), perhaps that’s where their future may be ?

I have always been amazed by the quietness of the 146. It’s incredible to be half a mile or so away from one taking off or landing and basically not be able to hear it.

Also, I’ve always thought it was ironic that for such a quiet aircraft EXTERNALLY, it was perhaps among the most noisy INTERNALLY. The high wing generates a lot of flap and engine noise which is picked up in the cabin, and the fact that the gear bolts right to the fuselage seems to cause a lot of noise also during extension and retraction. I must say that I have no quantifiable data to support this claim, just a second hand report from my father, who once rode the beast.

My favorite flight of all time was on a BAe 146. From Delhi to Paro, Bhutan. The flight took us directly above the majestic Himalayas and included two circles around Mt. Everest with Everest on one side and Kanchenjunga on the other. Also Paro has one of the most spectacular approaches.

It’s even worse than you remember, the 727 was labeled “The Whisperjet” by Eastern IIRC. Seems ridiculous now, doesn’t it?

i love the old avro’s they’re possibly my favourite aircraft, purely becasue they are wacky… i was lucky enough to fly home on one from brussels last year. fast acceleration, and really poor climb rate, it could only be British

I flew on one 2 days ago… It’s even worse in hot weather.

I remember these aircraft being marketed as ‘Whisperjets’ by Ansett New Zealand in the late eighties.

Going by the BA Corporate Relations site, the type will be replaced by Embraers completely, eventually. That said BA retains the ownership on the lease of six Avros – said six being subleasd to Swiss.

Apparently G-LCYB has been retained due to lack of EMB190 crews. So that is atleast one Avro flying around LCY.

Is the 5.5 degree steep approach to London City for both ends of the runway or just for the approach over the city?
I don’t think the other side of the runway coming over the estuary is so built up, or is it ? therefore requiring the steep approach from that end too?

I thought the BA Avro’s at LCY were in the process of being replaced by one of the Embraer types?

This is what concerned me the other day when I was at LCY, there were no British Airways 146’s to be seen, only the Embraer types were in operation. No doubt other airlines will start following suit, the beginning of the end perhaps?

I always like seeing the BAe 146. SN Brussels currently use them into LHR. ๐Ÿ™‚

I always believe that LCY London City Aiport gave the BAE 146 a new lease of life

Iยดd even go so far as to say that LCY gave the BAe-146 a life to begin with!
