The plane crashed this morning in Indonesia with six fatalities. The Governor of Papua had a lucky escape as he was due to be picked up by the plane.

Indonesian carriers the have a fleet of less than 10 planes will be shut down after 2012. The Associated Press writes “the new regulation, signed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono earlier this year, is part of efforts to improve the country’s safety record following a string of deadly accidents. Commercial passenger airliners have three years to meet the requirement, Yurlis Hasibuan, the Transportation Ministry’s air certification director told The Associated Press.” Indonesia began deregulating its airline industry in the 1990s, “but weak regulation and poor maintenance have led to fatal accidents that have killed more than 120 people in recent years,”

A bird in the bush whispered that a diplomatic flight (think G20) might not be restricted by EU regulations!
Yes, but all I actually said was that I saw a Garuda A330 at Gatwick on the 2nd.
Which I did. :diablo:
I was “thinking G20”. Why on earth do you think I was at Gatwick on a Thursday morning in the first place? :p

You don’t have to take my word for it, chaps. 😎

Well they are on the EU banned list, I just checked. 😛 Shame about the crash, they really do need to sort out their maintenance.
Well, that’s a conundrum, call Inspector Clouseau.

Then guess again. :p
It was PK-GPE (c/n 148). The aircraft, an A330-341, was delivered to Garuda on 25/2/97.
I know it’s Easter, but that’s no excuse for teaching your Granny to suck eggs! :diablo:

Not even chocolate ones?
The plot thickens while the chocolate melts…

Which I guess was actualy a UK charter aircraft in Garuda colours rather than a Garuda machine as they are indeed banned from the EU.

Sad news, and the second time in a month that an aircraft I’ve once flown on has crashed. Aircraft was ex G-JEBC which I flew on in 2005 BHD-LGW, last month was the Fedex (ex-Delta) MD-11. Thoughts go out to all those concerned…

Bad news. I see it’s an ex-Flybe aircraft, too.
Indonesia’s reputation for air safety is really going down the pan. I remember a big fuss being kicked up when the Adam Air 737 went down a few years ago.
Yeh, There’s a new air crash investigation on nat geo, on this crash. Was 7 months until they recovered the boxes as adam air wouldn’t fund the money to send submarines for the boxes.

Indeed! Incidentally that was the most recent episode of ACI.
Are they still banned from the EU?

There was something on the news the other night about Indonesian Airlines having the worst safety record in the World!!!
