Well, this post on ATS suggests to me that BAe had very detailed work in play by the time the JAST started to evolve:

And this article in Flight International from 1991 explicitly mentions multiple UK ASTOVL designs, including Stealthy designs dating back to the 1980s:

Am i being dumb? This is all news to me. I didn’t realise the UK was so advanced in stealth research in the 1980s (from 1983?), and i hadn’t thought the UK had contributed so heavily to the MD/BAE JAST design.
