BAE Woodford – Mistaken identity

I remember as a young plane spotter at Manchester Airport during the late 1970’s to early 1980’s hearing about an Aviogenex TU-134 mistaking nearby BAE Woodford aerodrome and landing there instead of Manchester Internatonal. Was this fact or fiction? Can anyone with knowledge elaborate any further on this, or any other similar incidents? Many Thanks!

Last Farnborough show the B52 did its flypast along the runway at Blackbushe, and the previous show I believe the B-1 did flypasts at Lasham and Blackbushe before finding Farnborough…

….You can see why our friends from across the pond have always favoured the blanket bombing approach to the RAF’s Precision bombing approach…. 🙂

Perhaps it’s because of such poor navigation, that the USA invented the term “Tactical” Nuclear Weapon :diablo: 1000 megatons and they still need Bomb Damage Assesment pics to see if it landed in the correct country……

The USAF has repeatedly buzzed a glider field mistaking it for Farnborough. Not sure of the name of the glider field. Anyone?

when i was stationed at honington we used to get C5’s AND C141’s , lining up and trying to land all the time (even the occasional airliner), as its on a similar orientation to mildenhall, but a couple of miles short.
once when i was stationed at Valley working on the visiting aircraft section, we we told by airtraffic that an american airforce shorts sherpa was diverting in, very short of fuel. once we had it connected up to the bowser, we got chatting to the crew, one of them, looking rather puzzled, with a handfull of maps said to me “say, what part of scotland is this?”

I remember seeing it holding in the distance thinking it was waiting his slot, then nothing just a long pause in the flying. Happy days.

BAE Woodford – Mistaken identity, the only one I can think of was the F111E of the USAF that missed the Woodford Airshow and did it’s flypast down Manchester Airports runway in 1977. As one local mag at the time put it ‘ qualiifying for Manchester Airports movements for that month’.
