Bag explodes on departing plane at SFO

Passengers boarding a Hawaii-bound flight at San Francisco International Airport got a scare Sunday morning when a shipping container with electronic gear inside exploded.

United Flight No. 33 was prepared to take off at about 9:30 a.m. when the small explosion occurred, said airport spokesman Mike McCarron.

“As the baggage handler was moving bags around the cargo hold one of the packed shipping containers exploded, a minor explosion, and blew the hinges off,” McCarron said.

There were no injuries, McCarron said. A battery pack for electronic test equipment might have been to blame for the explosion, he added.

The container was well padded and insulated and McCarron said the explosion would likely not have caused any damage to the plane even if it had been airborne.

The passengers were quickly evacuated from the area around the plane and were soon preparing to board an alternate flight to Kauai Island, Hawaii.
