It appears that the original hysteria over the extent of the looting of the Bagdad Archeological Museum were somewhat overblown. Slowly the truth will come out as more details of who did what when, surface. It will be interesting to see how much of the original material was actually looted by the average guy on the street. Surely the guys in charge of the museum will eventually tell the real story.
Is it usual for people to loot their own their own treasure? I always thought that was the job of the invaders.
I wonder how many other stories we saw reported were exagerated or poorly reported?

Yes, you are correct I read some of those reports but my point is that more recent reports suggest that much of the material wasn’t stollen after all which suggests that the reporting was poorly done. Perhaps based on the speculation of so called ‘experts’ outside of Iraq who couldn’t resist a TV interview
but who don’t know what happened.
Thats a good point about the hospitals but lets keep in mind who did the looting. I haven’t seen much follow up about this type of activity which suggests that it too, was overblow by the press. I would still like to know if people were actually tipped out of their beds by their neighbours. We were led to believe the Bagdad hospitals were overflowing with war wounded.
As far as protecting the oil industry, one can only imagine the howls if the US/UK had not taken steps to protect it has it is the main wealth of the county and is of particular concern to France , Germany and Russia among others.
It would appear that much of the vital infrastructure was indeed protected or at least the damage was minimal given that the country was invaded. Difficult to conduct an invasion without some damage.

Is that the same Geneva convention that applies to the middle east treasure plundered by guys like Schliemann and others and then stolen by the Russians during WWII which has never been returned?

The US broke the Geneva Convention by not securing the hospitals and historical treasures (most certainly those protected by UNESCO, like those in the Baghdad museum), and taking care of law, order and continuing civil services like trash disposal.
Haven’t heard much about that in the American media either, so Sauron certainly has a point.

Firstly, press reports in the UK at the time the museum was looted seemed to indicate that it was done by organised gangs waiting for just such an opportunity.
Iraq wasn’t invaded it was liberated wasn’t it? What I don’t understand is people whining about the looting of a museum when hospitals are being stripped of anything down to and including light switches! If you’re going to invade/liberate a country doesn’t it behove you to protect its vital infrastructure? Apart of course from the oil ministry?

Somehow i don’t think you are referring here to all the “WMD-discoveries” which were proudly announced so far, but none of which were actually true 😉
