There is an interesting article in Time Magazine issue July 14 page 42 (well known anti-american magazine) on how the allied troops looted and trashed Bagdad’s international airport.
This includes the destruction of half a dozen of Jet’s and the loot of a duty free shop.
It’s hard for me to believe that some uncontrolled privates could do that without any control of an officer.
Five of them had been reported serviceable by US inspection before.
According to the magazine , the Iraquis have nothing to do with the loot.
Damage is estimated as high as $100 million. Good for the tax payers !

Whisky Delta ..
I was not ‘yank’ bashing as I previously said…
And as for the Grow up remark, well,I will not even dignify it with a response…….
Our opinions are going to differ and this is not place to be discussing it..
I will leave it at that.

These were left there sans engines in the beginning of March before hostilitities began. Evidently servicable aircraft were flown to Syria or Iran…..another example of Time magazine screwing up,
PS You would have to have huge balls to take out an airliner as a private in the army without consent from higher ups!!! a totally unbelieveable story.
I agree that this story is hard to believe too. It would mean that some privates were lets alone without any officer there.
As far as I understood in Time’s article , the trashed jets were condider as “fixable” by some experts. Anyway , if you find a copy take a look on the article , that’s … amazing.
Cheers!

If I’m not mistaken the US Congress passes the Lend-Lease Act about the time of the Battle of Britain allowing $7 billion of weapons and supplies to Britain. Not enough for ya? Remember that $7 Billion of weapons in 1940’s dollars.
I don’t know what you attempted to accomplish by bashing the US involvement in WW2. Considering it was a war that never took place in the USA, wasn’t within 1000’s of miles of our homes for the most part, we did quite a bit.
Or we can turn it around? Where was Britian when Poland was invaded? How about France and they are only a Channel away?
Not much accomplished by that is there? Second guessing the actions of old men 60 years ago does nothing. Bashing a country now for it does even less. Grow up!

Oh take it somewhere else guys, this isn’t entirely appropriate for this “Airliner” forum. 😮

I am not in for ‘YANK’ bashing as you term it..
I just do not like the attitude of some people whatever there nationality..
When it suits some they will declare themselves allies so as to save there own backsides so to speak..
And then when the ‘Glory’ beckons they will start shouting about how many troops they sent to the place as though they fought and died all on there own..
Okay. The aforementioned attitude is not as common in this forum as others, thank god, and maybe my comment earlier was abit harsh(and if it caused genuine offence to anyone.I apologise..but I cannot stomach the attitude as mentioned earlier.)
With regards to the second world war…
While I realise that the Americans had a huge influence on the outcome of the war all I will say is it took an attack on Pearl Harbour to drag the USA screaming in…
We had asked for the USA assistance long before this but at that moment in history it was not in the USA’s best interest..

Wasn’t Clark Gable a gunner on an 8th air force B-17 during WW2 ?

If you read an American history book you’ll find out that John Wayne and Charlton Heston were our greatest war hero’s and they fought on all front in a branches of the services. 😛

And there is me thinking that the US were the only participant in the World wars and we in the UK never lost a soul in combat…
Didn’t the US also solve the enigma machine coding…?!?!
Must be those English history books I read….
I will read an american one next time…!

I thought according to Hollywood, the US was the only ally during both WW’s…
But, I suppose the explanation for this being attributed to US forces is that the rest of the allies in Iraq (ie us and the aussies) were busy in Basra while the US pushed onto Baghdad.

Last time I checked the US isn’t the only “allied” force. The Allies won WWII so I guess if you want you can give us the entire credit for that too.
