Bahrain to Birmingham & Back

We left Bahrain at 14:30 Zulu to take A9C-HWR to Flybe at Birmingham for a maintenance check on the number 3 engine.
Here she is waiting for the crew and my lovely wife who was joining us for a free trip home to see her folks 😀 😀

The temperature in Bahrain was 31 centigrade and we knew Birmingham was below zero 😮 so we were not looking forward to the arrival, the departure was uneventful and all was well.

The pilots for this trip were Capt. Xavier Coppens and F.O. Mohammed AlFadallah.

Then the run up the gulf coast over Saudi.

We made a fuel stop in Larnaka, the RJ85 has very short legs 🙁

Then on to Birmingham, but it was too dark, cold and hectic for photograph 😮

Two days later our aircraft has a clean bill of health and its time to return to the sun, I made the preparations with the help of the lads at Flybe and loaded up the “shopping”, well its nearly Christmas 😀

Departing Birmingham it was nice to see the snow from the air (especially for the Bahrainis), we passed an airport, I think its Coventry, I am sure one of you chaps will let me know 😉

Then a nice cruise to Athens for the fuel stop, we passed the Alps on the way and took some nice pics.

http://img345.imageshack.us/img345/593/thealps5ev.jpg

At Athens we landed after an Agean RJ100.

Then parked next to the Agean line 😀

After fuelling we departed Athens and headed home, we arrived safely and loook forward to the next trip. 😀

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the repy, it makes it all worth the effort and I am happpy that people find my input interesting.
Like you I am more “into” historical/military stuff but I visit so many strange places (today we went to Port Sudan) that I feel the need to share it with anyone that may have an interest.

A cople of people have mentioned thier surprise and I think maybe I should place my reports somewhere else 😉 cos many people may be missing them, what do you think ?

The operation I work for is military and we visit many military bases, but taking pictures is decidedly dodgy to say the least, but look out for simmilar reports on the military forum. (A couple of monts ago we were at Tehran intl. and an Iranian SU27 taxied past us but I didnt have my camera) 😡

Thanx again.

Yes it is (was) Coventry

Hi F S

Sorry for the slow response, I tend to follow Historic forum rather then commercial and only pop into commercial occasionally. It doesn’t seem as if anyone else has answered your question, so I will.

The photo is indeed of Coventry – you can make out the Midland Air Museum collection (inc Avro Vulcan) tightly parked by the collection of buildings just above the left hand end of the smaller cross-runway.

You can also see the Air Atlantique collection of propliners (Electras, DC-3s, Shackleton etc)etc just below the end of the cross-runway.

Some good trip reports you’ve posted recently, and slightly different from the norm of reflecting passengers’ viewpoints – excellent photos too.

Great shot, Again the original image was small so it had to go quite little

I had a go at the 747SP but the F16 is abit small and therefore the quality is a lot lower 🙁

I see thanks for that FS, really interesting. Any ideas when the new 744 is finally going to come online, hasnt that been being fitted out for the last 2 years or so?

I only work with the RJ85s, about 75% of our work is for the Royal Flight though and we have a very good working relationship with them

They are based at Bahrain International (OBBI) and we are based at Shaikh Isa Airbase (OBBS).

Our primary role is transporting Military and Government VIPs and we are essentially a military unit but we run on EASA145 regs and the aircraft are civil registered in the private cat.

We often arrive with the royal flight aircraft (we carry the guards, servants etc.) and the King flies on his 747SP, I took this one in Sharm El Sheikh last year
The wing is our RJ.

When the first RJ85 arrived in Bahrain (11 Nov 2001) it was escorted in by 2 F16s, one on each wingtip, unfortunately I was not on board, a colleague took this one 🙁

BHXlocal, can you do anything with these? and no it is not fake, 100% genuine.

I guess I am a lucky barsteward, not only do I get to do loads of travelling but its an easy job too 😀 😀 😀 not to mention the dosh :diablo:

(funny nobody mentioned the F16 lurking in the background in the first pic)

LOL, well the report is in a commercial forum, so many of us wouldn’t even be bothered, although I’m sure there are a few readers of this section of the site who would have liked it being there.

Wow very interesting indeed! Do you just get to work on the RJ85 fleet, or do they let you loose on some of the “bigger” stuff?

A 727 report would go down a storm here you know, and dont even mention that 747SP!

Blimey!! I didnt think there would be such a positive response to the report 😀

As I am new to this I am rather chuffed and thanks to all that have replied above, (funny nobody mentioned the F16 lurking in the background in the first pic)

I think I will post a report for all the good trips, we have been to some interesting places over the last year i.e. Islamabad,Tashkent, Ashkhabad, Tehran and Jeddah to name a few.

I see many interesting aircraft and from now on I will attempt to take more/better pics.

BHXlocal, go ahead and use the pics as you wish, I will send some more for you to “fix” if you like. Last year I took a picture of a North Korean TU154 while working at Halim Perdanakusuma, Indonesia, but I only had a crap camera. It would be good if you could improve it for me 🙂

I never read Trip reports, but the headline of Bahrain – BHX confused me greatly so I clicked, and I’m actually pleased I did…no comments about how one piece of ice was larger than the other in the soft drinks, or how cabin crew member X smiled nicely on leaving the aircraft.

No, this one was really interesting I thought, the other side of flying that many never get to hear about.

I agree that this is a trip report that shows the side of aviation that trip reports do not cover in this forum,

Any pilots take note; please write about eventful flights, or indeed “A day in the life of me” sort of article
