Following on from the posts about Lasham and the poorest preserved airframes in the UK,I thought I’d put up a post dedicated entirely to comments about the British Aviation Preservation Council. Some of the replies to the above mentioned posts were highly critical of BAPC and thier methods, going into some detail regarding BAPC’s policies and inefficiencies etc.
I’m certainly no expert on these things, but if the body that is supposed to be chiefly responsible for the welfare of Britain’s aviation heritage is in such a poor state then it should surely concern us all as enthusiasts.
What I’m hoping to do here is open up a discussion about BAPC’s problems so that they can be brought to wider attention, discussed and perhaps even remedied.
Do BAPC have a future and what sort of changes would be required?

I have my reservations about the BAPC, particularly recently and concerning the Blackburn Beverley; however to see how they are doing, we’d need to see their brief (what is it?) and compare how they are doing against that…
In terms of raising the profile of Britain’s historic aviation heritage they get a thumbs down from me – fundraising, likewise, and my conacts with them have not been inspioring in the past – but that may be unfair. As to numbering replicas, superb. A minor achievement though. Getting UK Museums to talk and (arguably) co-operate – variable, but that’s understandable.
Cheers

Hmm I see.. well I know that the BAPC is drastically short staffed – I wonder if more people were able to take on positions of responsibility (me included!), then things would be a little different.

Good call. Seems that the BAPC have contributed little in the way of pushing for lottery cash for significate airframes. Duxford and the larger estalishments no doubt have the resources to put bids etc together and good for them. Don’t hear of the BAPC getting involved though. The Trident at Heathrow and recent Beverley escapade are surely what they are mean’t to be for??

HI Ant
I didn’t realise the BAPC was in bad shape?
