BAPC no's

I was just looking up our glider’s and found a BAPC no for our Dagling BGA 493(BAPC 81) which i had forgotten. Are the BAPC numbers still uaed these days. If so what number have they got up to?

Must admit with such a wonderful name I thought it would be a bit more radical than a cross between a Boxkite and a Farman with maybe a bit of early Caudron thrown in for good measure. It often seems that the aircraft with the grandest names turn out to be the worst flyers but this one seems to have bucked that trend.

If you have a copy of Air Britain’s Civil Aircaft Registers of UK, Ireland & IOM on your shelves you will find it contains a full list of BAPC registered aircraft, page 498. The 2010 edition terminates with BAPC No: 300 Piffard Hummingbird reproduction. Wonder what THAT looks like?!!!

I think they have also been allocated to composite airframes where the identity of the source airframes is unclear or where they have been built from part finished components which never got onto the production line. Seems to ring a bell that there was a Tiger Moth with a BAPC number that had been built up from an assortment of bits and pieces.

You get one by having no other way of reference to the airframe, typically homebuilts which never flew officially, mock ups etc. Otherwise there was no way of keeping track of what was where with whom.

Just looked on my PDF of the 2010 NAHR (National Aviation Heritage Register) no mention of them in there (only as listed airframes); ironically the last airframe in the NAHR is NAM’s Zurowski ZP1 helicopter – BAPC 204, which would have been allocated circa 1984/5.

Best bet is to contact the BAPC secretary via the Website – he’s normally pretty quick with the replies and he will furnish you with all the informaqtion you require….(or I’ll ask him on Monday if I remember).

Hi Dave……….

Used to be listed in Wrecks and Relics but just looked in the latest I have, 21st edition and there is no list…….. Perhaps its use has been discontinued?

There is a listing in the 15th Edition 1996, none after that as far as I can see. See Msg 7 below.
