Can anyone help with this? if i use either of these can they be painted over with another colour? I know you can paint over enamel silver but am wondering if you can acrylic silver or if i decide to be brave & use bare metal foil whether i can paint on that.

I think all the options have one big disadvantage and that is weight which is going to degrade the flying performance. At best it is likely to need to fly faster to stay in the air and have a higher stalling speed and even less gliding performance than normal. At worst it may be that it will too inderpowered to fly at all.
I would tend to leave it alone and go with the factory finish particularly if you are a novice flyer.

When you want to use alclad, you need a very clean and smooth surface to get a good result. The Parkzone P51 has a very rough surface in comparison to a scale model. I don´t think it will work the way you want it. Maybe the thinner will damage the surface, too.
In my opinion alclad is a very good stuff but it´s the least thing to finish an RC plane made of foam.
I would use a spray adhesive and cover the plane in aluminium foil from the kitchen. It can be polished if you´re careful, it´s easy to repair scratches from bad landings and it´s way cheaper than Bare Metal Foil.

I don’t think so, Polished Aluminium & Chrome are the exceptions indeed, but I must say I’ve never tried.
It now depends on what you wish to do.
YOu can always paint the “colors” over the full plane, then once dry, mask off what you wish to keep, put the Alclad primer color, then spray the metallic coat.

Frank, can you paint over the Alclad highly polished aluminium?

You sure can paint over Alclad. I did it several times. Once it’s dry, it is just as good, if not better, as any other paint.
Testor’s Metallizer or or Humbrol Metal Cote (basically, all those paints you can buff) can’t be overpainted.

I’m sure with all the other markings it wont be so bad. I’ve been looking at the Aclad, that looks quite good apart from not being able to paint over it.
Can you paint enamel over acrylic & visa versa?

I would take an airbrush and simply spray it silver. Tamiya chrome silver for example. When you put Bare Metal Foil on the model, you might get some visibility problems. When you look up to the model in the air, the plane´s surface will reflect the color of the sky. So you have a sky colored plane surrounded by sky color:rolleyes:

If you have an airbrush, you might want to try AlcladII… It works quite well.
Have a look over at http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/ In the galleries, you should find some nice examples, plus tips and tricks about it..

Really speaking it would be helpful to know what you are trying to achieve. If you want to paint over acrylic silver it would be useful to spray a coat of Johnson’s Klear or Future floor wax over the silver. This acts a gloss coat protecting the layer beneath.
Hope this helps.
