Barry Sutton DFC

Visiting my fathers grave last weekend I noticed a nearby one with the name Group Captain Barry Sutton DFC. I believe he was a Hurricane pilot during the Battle of France (56 Sqn) but know very little else abut him except he died in 1988 at the age of 68.

Can anyone throw anymore light on his RAF career ?

Caroline

Amazed to see your post!

If you would like to get in touch with me (and if you are interested!) by sending a Private Message I will be delighted to see if I can acquire you a part of the Hurricane your father jumped out of in the Battle of Britain.

This is Barry.

Met him a few times. We unqualified aviation archaeologist types were able to find, identify and recover wreckage of his Hurricane and reunite him with a few bits way back in the early 80’s. It meant a good deal to him. Just one illustration of a positive outcome from some of the aviation archaeological activities recently maligned and questioned in another thread on this forum!!!

Not a trained archaeologist in sight and we managed to recover, record, catalogue and identify it all by ourselves. We should have got a Boy Scout “Archaeologist” badge for that!

Thanks for the image T1940

If I didn’t know you better I would say you were trying to make a point 🙂

Barry Sutton wrote a book, “The Way Of A Pilot”. A copy is currently sat on my bookshelf, waiting to be read. Picked my copy up for £8.00 on ebay a while back.

Hope this helps,

Dean

Men of the Battle of Britain has details of Gp Capt Fraser Barton Sutton. Probably the same man, all the details seem to fit. I’ll precis the details tomorrow if no-one else does…

snap!

Ian.

Try searching for Frank Barton Sutton. I’m sure it’s the same man. If you have Wynn’s Men of the Battle of Britain his biography is on page 490. If not I’ll try and type it up for you tomorrow.
