What’s everyones views on BA’s Deli service? I’ve encountered it twice now on GLA-LHR sectors, and I have to say I don’t like it. Whilst chatting to the F/A, I discovered the crew don’t like it either, and she hadn’t talked to anyone who prefered it over the old Scone, Clotted Cream and Jam. Apparently research led them to the idea to introduce Deli style sandwiches on all Shuttle flights.
I’ve written to BA’s Customer Dept, telling them my feelings. I’m just wondering what anyone else thinks? (Yeah, I’m just talking about my tummy again!) I’d encourage anyone else who can be bothered to write to BA and defend our Heritage against the American. (Hold on- American Heritage- contradiction in terms, surely?)
Nothing against Americans, but brits, imagine you’ve been abroad a while, and you’re going home: what would you rather have, Afternoon Tea with a Scone, or a ‘Feta Cheese with Tomato and Apple Chutney Bloomer’, as I was served two days ago? After all it’s ‘BRITISH Airways’, not ‘Foreign Airways’.
Cheers,
The Bhoy
PS this post is meant in a tongue in cheek manner where references to other cultures is concerned, although I’m serious about the Catering service. Or rather the lack of Catering Service.

RE: BA’s Deli Service on Shuttles

flying with anyone Business has to be the way to go… Unfortunately, it kinda prices itself out the market for most students…

RE: BA’s Deli Service on Shuttles
V1, you seem to be forgetting the industry climate which all airlines have to operate within. A sharp economic slowdown, possible worldwide recession, high fuel prices etc impact all airline’s performances including BA’s recovery. BA are doind well considering their situation.

RE: BA’s Deli Service on Shuttles
I think countries are not molonitic, in tastes. I flew supper shuttle sometimes and never had scones, sandwitches or something British on bord, despite being a tourist could find that a nice thing to eat on an English plane. Usually hot croissant with a rich filling, luxurious buns and so on. We can expect all Spanish passengers enjoying a paella on bord or the British a nice Yorkshire Pudding….imagine the germans having a sauerkraut. I think airlines are carefull with this issue and they make regular surveys among passengers to check the degree of satisfation. While working on ERA (Spanish regional airlines) the inflight service was one of the finest in Europe….nice cutelery, china, champagne all over, delicacies like Lobster quiche, basmati rice with macadamia….soft cream merringe with lemon pudding…and so on. We tend to give more Spanish food on bord, because we though people would want familiar menus. You know how good is Spanish cooking. Passengers (mostly Spanish) didn´t like the change. Passengers find eating over the Skies a fun and espect surprises not the regular food served down on earth. Airlines tend to make passengers feel special by giving them fancy food and giving a glamorous look.

RE: BA’s Deli Service on Shuttles
I agree, BA behave in many diffrent ways depending the passengers are from which country. On flight Delhi-London, air hosteses get fed up attending Indian travelers. They are always asking for a drink. They make a mess around the toilets etc. But even if they do allt his, there has not been even a single case of air rage from this sector. I think best to travel in a B747 is Business Class as i atleast find BA 747s too cramped.

RE: BA’s Deli Service on Shuttles
Well I did LHR-MAN once after doing MEL-SIN-LHR. The steward came to me at the back and threw at sandwich at me without even asking of I wanted it.
The sandwich was quite good though….

RE: BA’s Deli Service on Shuttles
I agree with what you say too Keltic. It’s just that I’m a bit ‘old fashioned’ in some respects perhaps. BA does need much to learn from other large airlines in terms of catering though. Airlines such as Singapore and Cathay put it to shame.
By the way, profit forcasts have recently been slashed by market analysts for BA. Seems Rod Eddington and his boys still have much work to do before BA can return to former glories.
On another BA related topic, their schedules state Concorde will be in service from 1st August. Sounds like they are doing something right at the moment then…

RE: BA’s Deli Service on Shuttles
Come on Guys, a bit more cosmopolitan approach won´t harm British palates. I love British food but I think it has a lot to learn from other coutries. Food is a pleasure and something to experiment with. You would surprise how British food was so much influenced by other countries. The world is not a shell, or a container and food is getting more internacionalized. I would appreciate a good scone on board, but don´t make patriotic comments with that. It´s not good. Sorry to contradict you.

RE: BA’s Deli Service on Shuttles
I agree 100% with your comments on this subject. BA seem to like appealing to the tastes of international passengers (ethnic tails anyone?) and quite often seem to forget that a large proportion of their passengers are actually British. The current deli menu seems very American to me. What is wrong with British Cuisine?
They’ll be serving McDonalds on their flights soon, something which Continental first tried on some of their domestic flights in 1997!!
Right, I’m off to cook myself a nice bacon sandwich… 🙂
