08.00 hrs. This morning’s BBC East has run, and is running, an appeal for funds to prevent the Bassingbourn museum falling into decay and closing.
Bassingbourn – operational base for ‘Memphis Belle’.
There you are – those TV people aren’t all bad. 🙂

There always used to be a stall at Duxford airshows manned by 2 old boys all about Bassingbourn and the 91st BG. That was from the museum and the 2 old boys were the ones that run it. I’m 99% sure they are at Leg Ends.

Chiefy, if you keep your ear to the ground you can sometimes fly in to Bassingbourn. It all depends on the C.O and if he’s an aviator. The last one had an military Auster and wasn’t too averse to a little gentle visiting. Worth an ask if you’re passing.

Thank you all for the information. I shall certainly go and visit it. I only live in Royston, fly from Bourn and had never heard of it!

I went to my first ever airshow at Bassingbourn in 1958, masquerading as an ankle-biter.
I’d love to see the museum too but it’s a long way from here. I’ll be visiting friends that live around the back of the airfield in a few weeks but on Saturday, unfortunately.

I didn’t know that they had a museum! Can anyone give me some more information?
Thanks in advance.
I didn’t either. I was there in the early 60’s as a petrol pigeon (air cadet to you)

I also didn’t know it had one. If they don’t advertise the fact then how are we suppose to know its there, or do they in a small way?
I would love to go and see it

Because Bassingbourn is an active Army base security appears to be quite tight. However from an old pamphlet the contacts appear to be Steve Pena (Curator) Tel/Fax 01462-835787 and AN6530@aol.com and Vic Lawson (Museum Admistrator) 01763-242842. All visits by appointment. Hope this helps.

It’s in the control tower and is open mondays and wednesdays by prioir arrangement. It’s free but worth putting something in the donation box. Lots of great photo’s of the 91st BG and the Belle.
