Bastille Day Spitfire Quiz

Hi all,

Beside Swissmustangs and Mark12, Who could tell me more about those Spits?

Sorry for the poor quality, but they are not fakes.

Good luck!

I’ll go for a Hudson for the twin-fin aircraft (nobody going to go for a P-38?), with an Oxbox in front of it.

Best wishes

Deffo not a C-45 – the tailplane does not protrude through the fin on a Beech

I agree with M12 Lockheed 12 – what about the camouflaged fin in front of the Lockheed? Odd shape….is it an Oxbox?

Anyone care to hazard a guess at what appears to be twin fins and rudders to the right of the third picture?

Moggy

I’d go for a Lockheed 12… or a twice full size Vampire.

Given that it’s not painted in camouflage, I’d say it’s the camera-ship. I thought it could be a C-45, but the fin’s the wrong shape.

However, there appears to be an Airspeed Oxford beside that!

Interesting to note the attempt at “backdating” “BS509” to the early rounded rudder with a bit of light coloured paint.

Which would probably be invisible in the air.

I was privileged to watch this film last night for the first time.

Although the language was a bit of a problem, I got the general gist of the plot.

The film is packed with top quality aviation with the participation on set of at least six ‘dressed’ Spitfires of the French Air Force, intercut with period material, including a close formation Spitfire wing of 20 plus Spitfires and some onboard low level mission Boston material.

For aviation film buffs, this is a must. I would best describe it as the French ‘Angels One Five’. Pure early 1950’s film nostalgia.

Mark

Sounds good! 🙂

Sorry for the delay getting back to you, gents.

Good guess NC900
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v235/inglewood51/affiche-grand-cirque.jpg

Seems like this movie was broacasted on satellite tv last year, which is strange enough since the original rolls of this movie are reputed to be locked in a safe somewhere, but obviously, there are some copies around.

Anyway, the movie is very different from the book, but if you have not read it, then the movie is fine. Too bad they could not have Tempests for the second part. Spits used in the movie were coming from groupes de chasse Nice and Provence, and it was shot in 1949. Funny thing is that they also painted bogus serial number on the Spits, and changed most of the characters’ names, execpt for Commandant Mouchotte.

Let’s hope the guy who owns the rights will decide to release it someday.

Thanks for your interest, gents.

Cheers,

Laurent

Pierre Cressoy as Closterman

Not quite. While it might be based on “The Big Show” – Cressoy doesn’t play Clostermann – at least not in name.

The story in this film actually covers “The lives of three comrades fighting in the Forces Françaises Libres’ flight.”

In fact, there is a very strong connection with a french ace
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v235/inglewood51/jf1.jpg

but several Spits received the “JF” markings

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v235/inglewood51/jf2.jpg

Any idea why it was done?
