battle damage or…

the curious case of the newly restored Fairey Battle

Conspiracy theorists for a queue please.

What’s with the saga of the Fairey Battle

Why transport to Hendon, start to assemble and then dissemble and take up to Cosford? Was there some special event at Hendon which required it to be assembled prior to its move up to Cosford – otherwise seems a bit of a waste of effort.

We have three stories so far

Brochure from the open days “says that they are strengthening the wing joints to stand up to 25 years of display, either on the undercarriage or hung”

FlyPast says that it is to fit instruments and armament (are they really that twitchy about the radium in the luminous dials and deaccs?) and “other work”

Aeroplane Monthly says it was damaged in transit from Rochester

so………..

what’s the story, morning glory

I had no idea about any of this, and was indeed wondering where it was when I was at Hendon last week!

I suspect that we arent hearing the whole truth here.

The aircraft was on display at Hendon before it went to Rochester, and they did no serious structural work to the wings or fuselage that would cause them not to fit.

Let us be careful not to cast aspersions on the good people of Rochester!

This seems to be a bit of a “British” problem.

Build a wing….only they dont fit!!!!

I spoke to an Engineer at Cosford on Friday, and he told me the folks at MAPS didn’t have enough room to put the wings on, and when they tried it after delivery at Hendon it was found that they needed to be ‘tweeked’ a bit to get them to fit

An article in Aeroplane said that the Haulage company hadn’t secured her properly and was damaged on its way to Hendon. It’s gone to Cosford for some further repairs.

🙁
