Battle of Britain Day approaches…

In what seems like a very short space of time for me,September is upon us again and this means that Battle of Britain Day (September 15th) can’t be far away. Inevitably, the Few have once again become fewer since the last BofB Day, and so with the passing of time the task of remembrance falls increasingly on the younger generations.
This train of thought has got me thinking about what we can do to promote the occasion and keep it in the public eye. I remember Geoff (Von Perthes) posted something similar around this time last year, and we came up with an idea that worked a treat and that I hope we can repeat this year. The idea was to post a request to the Classic FM radio show ‘Lunchtime Requests’, which goes out every weekday here in the UK between noon and 2pm. Basically, you email or post a request to the show, giving your reasons for your choice, and perhaps with dedications etc. As a result of last year’s ‘campaign’, Spitfire Prelude and Fugue by Sir William Walton was played around the middle of the show,it’s peak audience time. Result! Classic FM is arguably the most widely listened to Classical radio station, so it goes out to plenty of people both here on FM and around the world online.

Phone (during the show) 0845 7 49 1812

Does anyone else have any other ideas about what we can do to mark the occasion?

Well done Tony.

I have suggested that the BoBHS bring along the full list of as yet un-sponsored names to the signing event we are having at the museum in aid of the monument on the 26th September, in the hope that those coming along to have their items signed will also sponsor a name.

You can also sponsor a aircrew name on the monument for £10, there are still 1308 names that are not yet sponsored. Follow this link for more info http://www.battleofbritain.net/bobhsoc/monument.html .

Alternatively, you can come to our museum on the 26th September, meet some Battle of Britain pilots, & get them to sign a print, book, or whatever you bring along. It’s £10 per item with ALL money raised going to the monument. Last month we raised £2,300 at a similar signing for the monument. more details here http://forum.airforces.info/showthread.php?t=30626

Who knows I may make you as famous as Steve Young

Geoff.

Geoff, I have offered to sponsor two names on the memorial and am awaiting to find out if they are still available!

regards

Tony

Calling all aviation enthusiasts – this is your chance to see two classic RAF movies on the big screen.

To commemorate Battle Of Britain Week in this the 60th Anniversary Year of D-Day, HULL SCREEN – East Yorkshire’s only art house cinema is bringing two classic British films back to the silver screen. This is your chance to see:

The Way to the Stars Friday 10th September at 2pm and 7.30pm

Known for its memorable opening sequence, this classic film is a must see on the big screen. Good performances distinguish this evocation of a World War Two bomber base in England. Studiously antiheroic in its concentration on human relationships rather than stirring combat. Although set in the South of England ‘The Way to the Stars’ was actually filmed at RAF Catterick in North Yorkshire in 1945.

Journey Together Saturday 11th September at 7.30pm

Directed by John Boulting and produced by the RAF Film Unit in 1945, this film pays tribute to those who trained and flew with Bomber Command. Richard Attenborough (in his first starring role) plays an aspiring pilot who travels to America – only to be told by his flying instructor (played by Edward G Robinson) that he won’t make the grade. Instead he returns to England as a bumbling navigator, where his questionable skills are put to the test as they ditch in open water following a raid on Germany.

Without grovelling too much, the premise behind appealing directly to those with a keen interest in the RAF (and our aeronautical heritage) is that if successful, more classics of the British cinema will be shown. So this is your chance to support one of the north’s few remaining independent cinemas – through your patronage. The more bums on seats the more likely that other classic aviation films will be shown. For additional programme and location details telephone Hull Screen Box Office on (01482) 327600.

Um….excuse my confusion….is this a different Bill Reid than the one I’m familiar with? I thought Bill Reid died, but I’m thinking Bill Reid who won the VC flying a Lanc….did’nt he pass on a few years ago? Met him at DX in 2000, nice guy…if he’s still alive I’ll be all the happier!

Mark

Sorry, that’s my fault. It was Wing Commander Al Beaton, a 603 Sqdn vet. who will be attending. Dunno what made me say Bill Reid!

Also there will be Norman Brown and Andrew Jackson DFC….

Edinburgh event – 14 September

Bill Reid, a pilot in 603 Squadron during the war, will be present at the Dominion Cinema, along with a historian and current Tornado pilot from 56 Sqdn, to talk about the Battle.

There then follows a screening of…..Battle of Britain :D:D
