Heard a story the other night that the Battle of Britain flight may be moving from Conningsby to Scampton if Scamton gets the money required for work on the airfield.
Regards
Tom

Have you actually been to Scampton! it is so run down we refused to go there when Coningsby’s runway was resurfaced, we went to Barkston Heath instead and that wasn’t that good.
Yeah went last year to see the Reds.Where would the BBMF like to move too?
The bits of the RAF that turn your little air display flying machines into effective war fighting aircraft. Without them, you may as well stay at home and not have an air force!
James read the RAF web site and stop looking at just the pictures, you may learn something about modern AIR POWER!
Yeah I look at the RAF website only looking at aircraft, base’s Equipment ,news and downloads ๐

Vern – I would love to share your optimism but look at what flies in Lincolnshire and then do the maths! It doesn’t add up and something will go . As for the Wing Commanders exiting the RAF – more likely a promotion or a move sideways .
Optimism??? I wanted the RAF to stay in North East Norfolk because that’s where my House is. ๐
Maths??? Your right they don’t add up.
Wing Commanders??? A National Audit Office report slamming your maths and decision making can put the brakes on your career, big time, very easily and itโs a very difficult thing to cover up. I have seen Senior RAF Officers asked to resign their commissions due to **** ups with money before, it happened my Station Commander on a radar unit about 17 years ago. ๐

What are 1ACC (currently at Kirton in Lindsey) and 90 Signals Unit (including TCW from Brize and ERAS from Sealand). ? ๐ฎ

You have already been told by at least three different past and serving members of the RAF that it isnt happeneing. Which part of this are you having difficulty with?
Thank you MOTF, As one of the three, I would state the same ๐

I anyone thinks that units are ring fenced in the Air Force they are sadly deluded! The cuts that have plagued the RAF for the last few years do not exclude anything from consideration. The actual situation at Scampton is that large numbers of the married quarters have been sold off. The single accomodation isn’t wonderful but nothing that cannot be fixed with money. The chances are that the RAF won’t want to keep the number of bases it has in Lincolnshire.
VERY WRONG!!!!! The plan was that most of the RAF is going to be based in Lincolnshire or next door counties. ISTAR assets (Nimrod R1, Sentinel and Sentry) at Waddington, Supply and Logistic assets (TSW) moved from Stafford to Wittering, Joint Harrier force at Cottersmore, Typhoon training at Coningsby and Comms/ASACS assets at Scampton. The big problem with this plan was SCAMPTON!!!!!! The place is falling to bits. The Wing Commanders who did the study into the move of units into Scampton seriously underestimated the cost of getting Scampton up to scratch. The CRC at Neatishead was due for an equipment upgrade in 2004, this was cancelled and the equipment was installed at Scampton. 1 Air Control Centre was moved from Boulmer to Kirton in Lindsey, to make room for all of the Neatishead scopies that had no work until the Scampton CRC was up and running. Tac Comms Wing at Brize were on the verge of moving to Scampton when this happened in Jan 06. SEE HERE The rumour was that TCW planned the mother of all redresses against the Wing Commanders who had pushed for Scampton as a lot of personnel had moved to Lincolnshire early to get their kids into schools and such. Another rumour I heard is the same wing commanders are no longer in the air force.

Last time I saw the place was in 1982. The Vulcans had just left. Rumour has it that the runway will be resurfaced at Scampton in the near future. I’ve actually got to go to Scampton on a H&S course next month (Wanted to go to Waddo, but my H&S officer at Scampton (my parent unit) put me on the Scampton course, which has blown my drinking plans with my bro in the mess at Waddo right out of the water.

I’m not to sure about the moving bit for the BBMF but what I do know is from October this year the Lancaster and I believe at least one Spitfire are to be based at Coventry over the winter for maintenance purposes via a new contract by Atlantic Airlines.
Maybe this is where the speculation theory comes into play again. It’s gone from being maintained at Coventry to completely moving out of Conningsby!

For who. The general public who, after years of going to Coningsby now have to find Scampton
The Tourist Authorities who have to trash lots of expensive marketing materials because they say Coningsby and not Scampton
Or perhaps (and this is the most important) the servicemen and women who have to uproot their families to move them a few miles (not much distance but a lot of time on Lincolnshire roads) to accommodation that has already been condemmed.
You have already been told by at least three different past and serving members of the RAF that it isnt happeneing. Which part of this are you having difficulty with?
Thank you that sums it up nicely

Quote ‘however Lincoln is a very large tourist attraction and a Lancaster on it’s doorstep would be a big attraction’.
We get on average twenty thousand visitors through the hangar each year. If you want to visit it shouldn’t matter where we are located. However as I said in post no5 its just an unfounded rumour which nobody on the flight is taking seriously.
Nineteen thousand of those logged visits last year was me,
Do you ever take anything seriously, it wouldn’t have happened in my day…
Mind you we were very, very drunk. ๐
Wheres my tractor :diablo:

Had an email from the LLA stating they are staying put. ๐
No move planned at all; surprised there are only 20 replies to this thread, thought there would be more.
It’s amazing what Chinese whispers can achieve ๐ฎ
Brian.
I am in total agreement with Brian, mind you I long ago gave up being surprized by the MOD!

28 miles on Lincs roads is about 3 and half days of travelling.
I may be exaggerating for effect but the locals will no doubt agree!
Add a day to get through Lincoln itself… ๐
Not to mention moving the Visitor Centre and re-organising the Visitor Guides many of whom live nearer to Coningsby than Scampton.
Lincolnshire CC run the Visitor Centre so who would foot the bill of their move?
Pretty much what I meant when I mentioned public access.
It may be an interesting future for Scampers, particularly if Robin Doncaster Hood Sheffield airport demands some controlled airspace…

Whilst the dams raids may have taken place from Scampton, Woodhall Spa is the true home of 617 Sqdn. It is on the doorstep of Coningsby as is Metheringham, home of 106 Sqdn which also has strong associations with Gibson.
Plus they did operate from Coningsby as well, before moving to Woodhall Spa.

I think the RAF will pretty much decide to do what they want to! The cost of any move is nothing to the Mod.
