Battle of Britain Hall, Hendon ~ 23Jan16

As part of the RAFM@Hendon plans to celebrate the Royal Air Force Centenary in 2018, the Museum is conducting a condition survey which involves partly dismantling its aircraft around the site. They have started in the Battle of Britain Hall, which goes on until November, and last Saturday I had a wander down. Reminiscent of war bird maintenance at Duxford with panels open and bits detached. I shall keep adding to this as I shall probably have frequent visits to Colindale on my various trips down to London.

From RAFM Facebook

This Friday we will be making a major announcement about the future of the the RAF Museum at Horseguards’ Parade.

On site we will have on display the three aircraft that are found in the Museum’s RAF Centenary Project logo, a Sopwith Snipe, a Mk 16 Spitfire and a Typhoon Jet.

Below you can see the first two of these aircraft arriving at Horseguards’ Parade this morning having set off from the Museum at about 6.30 am.

As one of our Facebook Fans it would be great if you could be there…and if you turn up wearing something red, we’ll give you a small gift in return (subject to stock) We intend to make the announcement around 2.45 pm and this will be followed by a Typhoon Flypast over Horseguards’ Parade.

We’ll post more photographs over the next couple of days of our preparations at Horseguards. If you can make it on Friday, we would suggest that you get there for 2pm. If you can’t make it, don’t worry, all will be revealed later on Friday. ‪#‎NamesOnAPlane‬ ‪#‎NotAnAprilFool‬

Have you been able to ‘step over the line’ and get really close like the photographers in the video or is it selected people only?

As part of the Museum’s RAF Centenary Programme members of the Michael Beetham Conservation Centre are currently conducting a survey of the aircraft in the Museum’s Battle of Britain Hall prior to the creation of a new permanent exhibition in this area. In this short film Rebecca Dalley, the Museum’s Centenary Programme Manager, invites members of the public to peer beneath the skin of these iconic aircraft and partake in a once in a life-time opportunity to view their inner workings.

Presumably some aircraft will swap for ones at Cosford? The B17 would be better up there and the Catalina could join the other Coastal Command aircraft. (I know shes Danish) Preferably next to the Seagull and Sunderland?

Meanwhile in the main museum building there have been a couple of changes. Electric light has been installed in the Halifax cockpit and the area around the Tornado/Buccaneer has been cleared and the blue carpet has been pulled up.

It’s pretty much the same as pictured previously. Hurricane, spitfire and 109 still wings off. Tail off 110 and defiant, Blenheim, heinkel and Stuka critical points covers off. Sunderland was open. Very busy though, car park very full.

Was planning to go to London today, instead I’m enjoying the increasing wind chill here at Duxford. I’ll probably be down tomorrow.

I started this as a photo thread about the aircraft moves.

OK, fair enough. Obviously the news about the ‘RAF Centenary Program’ isn’t all bad, in general I applaud the renovation of the Battle-of-Britain Hall and the creation of a ‘science, engineering and technology learning space’ in the Milestones Hall and none of this would be possible without the funding made available from the National Lottery. The National Lottery clearly have criteria that have to be met to obtain funding, the RAF Museum has little choice but to meet those criteria if they want the funding.
