Battle of Britain Memorial

Form this month’s Scramble Magazine,

However, although the Queen has not yet committed to unveiling the Monument, the schedule for the VE/VJ celebrations plus representations from the RAF, Police and Local Authorities means it is increasingly likely that the unveiling date will be pushed back to September 2005.

Does anyone know when the monument was originally going to be unveiled, I believed it was August 2005, the height of the Battle.
Can we get nothing right? Thank heavens these brave men that we are remembering on this memorial didn’t turn round and say ‘no sorry, guv’ can’t go up today, I’ve got an appointment elsewhere’!

Whilst on the subject of the monument, I’d just like to say that as promised in my thread re the disposal of my complete set of FlyPast, the money raised (£100) has duly been sent off to the BoBHS, to sponsor ten names on the monument. One is a local airman, the other nine I asked the BoBHS to chose. I’m looking forward to seeing who they’ve picked for me.

We will be having at least one more signing event at the museum to raise funds for the monument (to add to the £4,300 we’ve already raised) when we open in April. I will of course post full details here when the time comes.

Geoff.

The Norman conquest,

No need for the Duke to apologise for my ancestors bringing civilisation to your country.

I’m in the process of donating as we speak, thanks for the reminder.

“What’s another name for the lower fuselage inspection panels on a B17?

The bomb bay”

Well I thought they were called bomb bay doors 😀 , but anyway let’s not split hairs!

The real point is that this is a very worthy memorial and from what I have seen on the web and in magazines it will be very impressive. The relief sculptures by Paul Day (!) depicting events from the battle look superb and will no doubt be even more impressive in their final form when cast in bronze.

If anyone is able to make any kind of financial contribution to the construction of this memorial I know that even the smallest amount will be welcomed by the fund-raiser, Stephen Gleeson. If you are able to make a £10 donation (as some members here have already done so) you will have the privilege of sponsoring the inscription of the name of a Battle of Britain veteran (of your choice) on the memorial itself. I will try to post details of the website again (unless someone beats me to it).

I think she maybe to busy apologising for the last ice age, The death of christ, Roman invasions in and around europe, The Norman conquest, Black death, The battles in the Crimea, The Brittish empire, WW I, WW II, The holocaust, Korian war, Vietnam and any other war or disaster from around the
World. President Blair is a bit busy as well, he cant find the corner piece for his Noddy jigsaw.

There is a service and flypast in London on the Sunday nearest to Battle of Britain day on the 15th September every year. On big anniversaries like the 50th it is on the day its self. Perhaps this could be the best day.
A service at St. Clements in the Strand, a march to the new memorial, a dedication and a small flypast on the 15th would seem just right to me.
