Battle of Britain relic help?

Hello all

I recently aquired a very interesting relic and was wondering if anybody could help with its identification. It was labeled as being part of Bf109E-4 WNr 2803 of 9/JG51, which was shot down on the 15th September 1940 at Skinners Corner, Paddock Wood.
The relic, which is a piece of skinning measures approx 23 x 26cm. It has the remains of what could possibly be a unit emblem or insignia. However as it’s only a small section it’s difficult to tie it in with known designs. Also it has the stencilled number 3116 on the reverse, which if a serial number, would not make it from 2803.

If anyone has any theories or ideas or maybe recognises the piece, I would be very grateful.

many thanks in advance

IF 3116 is the Werknummer of the aircraft concerned, that would make it a Bf 109D-1 license-built by Fieseler Werke in Kassel.

Thanks for all the replies, much appreciated. Very interesting about the axe handle ID, it was one of the designs I was looking at as a possible match.
Cheers..

I can’t say whether it’s genuine or not, but what I can see is the emblem of III/JG51 the curved brown line is the handle of the axe and the light grey is the axe head, the last photo is the correct way up.

9th staffel of JG51 would have been a flying fish in a shield or a seahorse emblem.

Hi
It was actually given to me by a close friend and fellow collector who was also perplexed by the relic. He’d had it for a long time and couldn’t remember exactly who originally owned it. We discussed the number and design but were both left scratching our heads. I agreed to research relic for him, so it’s not a purchase from a dealer or eBay.

Can you say where you got it from? We might be able to tell you whether it’s likely to be genuine.

Best not to trust labels. There are a number of people on eBay and elsewhere trawling the internet and battle of Britain/ blitz then and now to make up more attractive histories. Sad but true. Never ever ever buy a Zeppelin relic labeled ‘London museum of war’ or similar.
