Does anyone know the names of the crew?

Phillip Rhodes

Well in the film it was Major Brandt, but I wouldn’t guarantee any accuracy for that. His navigator was apparently called ‘Brandt’s Navigator’

I thought the program was okay, but why did the producers omit the following, taken from http://www.worldwar2database.com/html/britain_40.htm:

Then, the unthinkable happened. An errant German bomber, thinking they were over open fields in a London fog, dropped its payload on the city on August 24. Britain responded by mounting a major raid on Berlin on the night of August 25-26. Causing only minor damage, the RAF Bomber Command raid embarrassed Goering, who said Germany would never be bombed. Hitler, enraged, ordered Goering to switch to London in retaliation. Hitler wanted to see RAF planes going down over their own capital.

If it wasn’t for the crew of this lonely bomber wir wΓΌrden alle auf Deutsch sprechen

Does anyone know the names of the crew?

Agree with the comments re the re-enactors – might have worked better if the actors had spoken in the present tense, or preferably using the veterans themselves. Also agree with sentiments expressed re the tit for tat bombings – thought the whole programme was not as unbiased as it should have been (did anyone notice the the RAF pilots, groundcrew and WAAFs were all featured in their messes/huts/workplaces, whereas the German pilots and bomber crew all seemed to be P.O.W – stark bunks and grey walls behind them, suggesting they were incarcerated somewhere…)

I must say I thought this was a major ommision too. Had those tit-for-tat events not taken place, and the Germans ignored it and stuck to the plan the outcome may have been very different.
Although, I’m still not 100% convinced the Germans were equipped for a serious amphibious landing attempt, even if they had succeeded in destroying the RAF.

I was a little dissapointed as they didn’t say anyhting as to why the luftwaffe had changed tactics and bombing london, which started when a bomber got lost and dropped his bombs over london which then started us to bomb berlin. Then hitler ordered the bombing of london. just a little thing i know but equally important.

Battlefields Britain

Not sure about the ‘reinactors accounts’ Particularly as there are some wonderful veterans out there, that said good to see a different take on it. πŸ™

Very enjoyable – but I have to agree with Dez, as I made the same comment myself last night. All the other programmes in the series had to have re-enactors, but I feel that they missed a golden opportunity to show pilots, ground-crew, RDF personnel and perhaps ROC veterans making personal comments about their contribution, and how they felt at the time. – cheers – Allan πŸ™‚

The CGI planes flying across the screen weren’t good! πŸ™

Well I enjoyed it…though a bit of a looksy around the cockpits of the delightful HAC Spit and Hurri would have been nicer than all that Extra stuff……I like the low level flying over the White Cliffs of Dover…..for those that dislike helicopters (you know who you are!!) that is the best way other than in a Fast Jet or a Spitfire!!

Sit in a Spitfire

I found this on the IWM website today…

IWM Battlefield Britain event

There will also be the fantastic opportunity to sit inside the cockpit of a Spitfire Mk V, one of the aircraft that was actually featured in the BBC series. The Spitfire, which is owned by The Historic Aircraft Collection, will be open all day, and for a Β£5 contribution to the Merlins over Malta Appeal visitors will be able to climb into the Cockpit and experience what it must have been like to be a fighter pilot all those years ago.

I might go along now for a look!

I was at Duxford in the Spring sometime when they were filming this.
The HAC Spit and Hurri were parked facing each other in front of the Hangar 4 doors and the Snows were being filmed in and around them…..
