The BBC Restoration series earlier this week featured the Bawdsey block as one of its entrants.
Sadly it did not win the vote, but there is an outside possibility it may sneak into the final under a ‘most voted-for loser’ arrangement.
This will be announced at about 10pm this evening (Friday)
Please everybody, if it does get through, spare the time to vote for it at least once?
The long term plans include the erection of a set of Chain Home masts on the clifftops as in 1940. Thy would look really impressive and give us another tangible link with the BoB

Just in case anyone misses the other thread, a big thank you to everyone who voted for Bawdsey. Even though it didn’t win, it was a great achievement to reach the final 8 and hopefully funding will be secured from other sources, allowing restoration to take place anyway.

I quick check on the BBC website has revealed that Bawdsey was indeed the highest-scoring runner up and is therefore through to the final of Restoration. I strongly urge everyone to support this project to save a vital peice of Britain’s aviation history and, as Moggy has already pointed out, an essential element to the victory in the Battle of Britain. Few tangible reminders of the BoB have survived – please do your bit to ensure that Bawdsey Trasnmitter Block isn’t lost as well.
The phone number to call to vote for Bawdsey is 09011 322208. Calls cost 50 pence, which is a very small sum, so please vote as many times as you can.

I should have added this photo of Bawdsey Manor, the Martello Tower taken from above Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club and the Chain Home Mast that English Heritage wanted to preserve but was well past its sell by date and had to be demolished.
Bawdsey Manor the birth place of RADAR once owned by Sir Cuthbert Quilter, the building in the immediate foreground is a Martello Tower from the Napoleonic War and the tower on the right was the only RADAR mast left on the site, this photo I took shortly before the demolition guys moved in (J Cooper)

Interesting this as I live not a dozen miles from Bawdsey. I have to say that Bawdsey is on a narrow peninsular between the North Sea and the River Deben, one look at an Ordnance Survey map shows how vulnerable this area is.
There are 5 Martello Towers (c1812) positioned between Bawdsey Quay and Aldeburgh, 4 of these are between the Deben and Shingle Street (now there is a wartime enigma in itself!). One of these towers is in grave danger of succumbing to the North Sea, over £1 million was asked to save it from the Environment Agency, usual thing no cash! Then Suffolk Coastal District Council suddenly find 100 grand from a contingency fund to save this Martello Tower. There are many wartime features in this area worth preserving but at what cost? I would prefer any cash be spent on shoring up the sea defences to protect the future of Bawdsey Manor, now there is where there is a cause.
They are all deserving preservation but if something isn’t done in protecting the shoreline here in the next twenty years there will be nothing worth preserving on this very vulnerable coastline.

Vote for both, then! This would help put them in the running against each other and eliminate the opposition. However, Bawdsey has to come in as the runner up, so all this may be academic …

Mind is split in half between Cardigan Castle and Bawdsey.
