Bay of Pigs B-26 Invaders c. 60s

B-26 Folks:

Good Day!

Seek possible info/data & pics that may exist from the Cayman Islands c. April 60-61. The UK Island administrator was Mr.Jack Rose a WW II RAF pilot. Perhaps he took some pics of the unscheduled B-26 landings at The Cayman islands…. maybe some relatives may have some info/pics on this subject. Pic below the 1st B-26 that defected to Miami c. Dec 1958. FAEC #933 (a famous Cuban Registration). Many FAL (Liberation AF) B-26s are known to have been re- directed to land at the Caymans during flight emergencies of the crisis at Bay of Pigs. Photo via AEC.

p.s If you have a copy of the B-26 now at Campo Libertad in desert camo/scheme plz post also. Tks in advance.

If anyone has found more photos of the American A-26s that participated in the invasion, please let me know by PM… I am editing a video of a funeral ceremony of one of the Cuban veterans of this action and I know the other vets will appreciate seeing a few authentic details. Thanks…

Do you have one with the roundel visible?

Unfortunately not. The long nacelles and a crescent of greenery shielded the roundels(?) from view.

Not sure if it helps, but Jack Rose was born on 18th January 1917 at Blackheath in London.

He joined the RAFVR in October 1938 and was with 3 Squadron (Battle of France) and 32 Squadron (Battle of Britain); he was shot down as a Pilot Officer by a Bf.109 on 25th August 1940. It is possible therefore that his name/family is well-known especially in this anniversary year.

He later served on Hurricanes at Exeter and was CO of 184 Squadron (Hurricane/Typhoon) and also a Hurricane Sqn in Burma. He retired as Wg Cdr in 1946.

It is quite possible also that the RAF Museum might hold his photo collection. Clutching at straws maybe – but hopefully a few leads…

No sure it deals directly with our request. but do you have teh book published by Midland Counties here in UK in 1994 called “Foreign Invaders” ISBN 1-85780-013-3 Book covers all foreign and US clandestine service of the Douglas A-26 / B-26 Invader. Excellent reading and there are two sections on Cuba and Bay of Pigs operations.

PM me if you need a scan of the relevant pages.

B-26 Bay Of Pigs folks:

Good Day!

TBarrell is right to an extent!

However, there’re many versions of B-26s/A-26s Some based on pure political issues or Mods..(SEA). Not into politics myself. The ID plate in the cabin says “Douglas B-26 AAF-44-XXXXX. The other sample is a Martin B-26 Marauder Bomber since birth until the end of its days plus the Mods civ versions. For our Bay of Pigs research purposes we would just call’em B-26 Invaders as their AAF cabin ID plate states. They carried plenty of guns but I’m not sure of the armament used on April 15, ’61. That’s why we would like to see some Cayman Islands pics. Tks in advance.

A-26 was redesignated B-26 once the original B-26 Marauder was out of service.

Cayman Islands B-26s Invaders:

Good Day!

As an additional info/data, we came to found that pics of those birds exist.

Seek for now a poss contact in the U.K with the relatives of the late Mr. Leslie Hines the ATC guy of Grand Cayman at that time. April ’61. He’s known to have taken a few pics of the unschedule landings of the B-26 Invaders during the Bay of Pigs conflict. Tks in advance.
